SCA History

Aria brings a huge amount of music knowledge to the SCA, having a bachelor's degree in the subject. Aria also does her best to welcome any newcomers she meets, whether it's in her capacity as A&S Mistress or Bardic Mistress of Seagirt. She is fearless around the campfire, singing or playing her harps and drums and encouraging budding young bards to have a taste of the spotlight.

She is also a fair hand with a rapier, sewing needle, calligraphy brush and enjoys leather working and even more bardic...

Aria has also composed many of her own verse and song. A few of her compositions that may be politely requested around the camp fire are:

  • Visions (Part one of her Joan of Arc song cycle which is still in progress) - a strophic song (verse/chorus) based on the events of the famous year that Joan of Arc rose to glory.
  • Ave Maris Stella - Dedicated to Princess Kate and performed as part of the Seagirt Baronial Bardic competition in 2010. - This liturgical text was often set to music by composers in the 13th and 14th century and dedicated to patrons or ranking members of the nobility to honour them.
  • The Light Ebbs Slowly - a song written about a young man who has gone to fight at the Battle of Bannockburn on the 23-24 June 1314 and about how he returns to his home and lady love only to die.
  • Fire Lizard Song - a fantasy inspired piece that nonetheless has a driving rhythm and imagery appropriate for period-esque Irish music.

Aria has held the Bardic Champion title for Lionsdale in 1999 and Seagirt in 2010.

At Daffodil Tournament in Seagirt, AS 46, she swore fealty as an Apprentice to Maester Iago ab Adam in the presence of all their friends at the feast.

Persona History

Araille (Aria) de Lyons is a noblewoman of the French Renaissance. She lived from approximately 1550 into the early 1600s. She is from Lyon (hence the surname de Lyons) and was born of a French mother and from a father (from whom she developed a love of the harp) whose Welsh heritage came to him from a legendary ancestor who fought during the troubled French/Burgundian civil war times of the 1400s.

Aria often, in her earlier life, dressed as a boy and practised the Arte of the Rapier at some of the more distinguished Salles (Academie Duello, for instance) and although in later life she settled down to a lifestyle more appropriate for her rank and station, she still thinks back longingly on her days of young rebellion and occasionally will sneak out for a midnight (or midafternoon) duel with old friends.

Her interest in music is notable and as she has always had a doting family with access to large amounts of musical personages who have passed through, and because her father was a collector of printed music, she has become somewhat of a local expert and will often hold discussion groups and small musical gatherings for friends. Very quietly she learns about herbs for healing and helps women with childbirth. She avoids being highly visible as a midwife as she wants to avoid notice by the Inquisition as much as possible.

Infamy

Once while Aria was out walking with her friend, now known as Don Alvarro, they found a beautiful dome of crystal which, when sung under, sent the music back to them with perfect acoustic clarity. Aria sang a song and as the final note dwindled a crash of thunder came from the sky and the heavens opened up and a deluge of rain came down, almost as if the Gods themselves were weeping. That was the day Don Alvarro gave her the name 'Aria Stormbringer'.
