SCA History

Lady Yasmina Laveroc changed her SCA to lady Julianna Badelle in AS48

Lady Julianna went to her first event in 2006, age 16, when her friend's family - the baron and baroness at the time - invited her along to a Sealion War. After listening to Master Iago perform great music around the Bardic Circle and a grand weekend of recorder lessons, archery and fencing, she decided to come back. Unfortunately she got lost at school and work so it would be a while before returning to the SCA scene. Namely 2001.

5 years later Lady Athelina Grey invited her back, and she has been attending weekly ever since. After extensive volunteer work, and a great deal of hands on learning, set up, take down, gate keeping, and impromtu heralding she was awarded her AoA. Since then she has found a music teacher, Lady Aria de Lyons, and taken over the Bardic group here in Seagirt.

Lady Yasmina Laveroc is the current Bardic Mistress, and she and her lord, Pierre D'Argent, currently host a Bardic Circle every second friday at their home.

The alternating Fridays are bespoken by members of the Barony of Seagirt, and Bardic can be hosted at anyones home. Lady Julianna is still working under the tutelage of Lady Aria de Lyons, learning to play the harp and to entertain people along the way. In the last year, Lady Julianna has worked on a number of filks, original songs, and cooperative SCA music.

List of Songs

Filks

  • "Shark" ~ A filk on the popular song 'Moose' hosting the same melody. "Shark" is a more family friendly version detailing the antics of several SCA members who enjoy 'sharking'; otherwise known as stealing a persons place in a dance during the dancing. Below are the lyrics to the chorus:

Shark, Shark, I love a Shark.
Ne'er danced with anyone
Quite like a Shark.
I've had many partners
But ne're so smart.
Ne're danced with anyone
Quite like a Shark.

  • "The Brave Boy Knight" ~ Based on a true story. This song is done to the melody of "Greensleeves", and follows the story of a young mundane boy who was knighted by the King of the Midrealms. The child is sick, and when the "Help fill a Wish Foundation" asks the boy what he wants, he replies that, all his life he has wanted to be a knight. The King trains the boy, knights him, but then shortly after has to say goodbye. The last stansa, and probably the most emotional of the piece, is provided below:

Ne'er before, and ne're again
Was a boy so sworn to fight.
That started out,
A mundane child,
And died a Brave Boy Knight.

Original Songs

  • "The Lyres Lifting Sound" ~ A poem, soon to be put to music, about a young man napping in the woods who follows the sound of a bard playing through the glen:

When through the Glen,
o'er whistling wind.
I heard what fancy found.
And all the woods and whiles did share,
the Lyre's lifting sound!

  • "Arm to Arm" ~ Her newest work centering on the Sealion War this coming week. She will be performing it at the Bardic Circle there.

Co-operative Works

  • "Violet Bides" ~ Patrick Rothfuss wrote the last verse to this song in "A Wise Man's Fear", and Lady Yasmina found it, put it to music, and wrote out 5 verses to complete the song. The music is done to the harp. The original text from "A Wise Man's Fear", and her inspiration, are as follows:

She sits by her window.
She sips at her tea.
She waits for her love,
To return from the sea.
Her suitors come calling.
She watches the tides,
And all the While
Violet Bides.

  • "Come With Me" ~ The lyrics to this piece are entirely Alison Bairds, Yasmina simply put them to music. The chorus is provided below:

Come with Me.
Oh, Come my Beloved.
Unto the Hill
And the Forest free.
There shall be mirth
And merry feasting.
Come, Maiden Fair,
And dance with Me.

Come one and come all to Mistress Yasmina's Bardic Circle. Please feel free to write to Jazzykinns at gmail dot com concerning any bardic questions.
