Dux Darius Corvinus 2023
Silver Darius coin made by Moneyer Ian Cnulle

Darius was a Duke of An Tir, who reigned three times - twice with Duchess Jacyntha Elizabeth Argentarius, and the third with his Lady Cometessa Morgaine Brigantia. During the first two reigns he was instrumental in the creation of the Patronage and of the Noble Estate. It was in his second reign that he formed a treaty with the Kingdom of Ansteorra to adopt the Order of the White Scarf for An Tir. During his third reign he created the Ordo Hastae Leonis. He put renewed emphasis on fealty during all of his reigns, with an effort to better reflect a period model. His most memorable event was his first in AS XV, when Strider and Catherine, then King and Queen of the West, came to Borealis. It was at this event that he received his first Award of Arms. Darius' awards can be found on the Order of Precedence

Dux Darius' persona was based in the early sixth century of Britain, where he and his family and household had an estate near Glevum, where they tried to keep the best qualities and ideals of the Roman era alive in the face of the onrushing dark ages. He and his Lady tried to forge a truce between that which is Roman in origin and that which is British. Bred of Patrician blood, but born on the Island outpost, after the Romans started to pull out, Dux Darius was happy to make his home in Britain, with his Celt lady beside him. Darian Household Page

On a more personal note, Darius loved all things Roman and Romano-British, and liked a good political discussion. He was an avid history buff, and wargamer. Games of strategy and skill appealed to him. Darius was a gourmet cook, and enjoyed recreating recipes from Apicius, and other period Italian dishes. His favorite flavours were chocolate and almond, coffee, and marzipan. He enjoyed working in wood and leather.

Memories

Dux Darius passed on September 23, 2025 AS LX 60

On behalf of Cometessa Morgaine, it is with great sadness that I share the news that Cliff Frick, known to many of us in the SCA as Dux Darius, passed away peacefully in his sleep last night after a valiant fight with cancer. He was surrounded by family and left this world with love at his side.

Darius was a larger-than-life presence, both in stature and in spirit. A Knight, three-time King, and Lion of An Tir, he carried the Kingdom in his heart even when he wasn’t able to be as active as he wished.

As big and imposing as he could appear, anyone who ever attended one of his Courts knows he was truly a softie, quick to happy tears when sharing in the joys and triumphs of his populace.

For those of you who knew him well, there are so many memories that capture his heart, humor, and humanity. I would love for you to share those stories here so his family can read them and take comfort in how deeply he was loved by this community.

A Poem a Day, September 23, 2025

Hindsight

I write an ode
Two days too late
For you to hear it.
Sometimes still
Tears clog my throat
The laryngitis of loss
That no dram will clear
In time for me to evoke.
I rode beside you
For half a year
Your jester, jongleur, journalist
Praise poet to so Worthy a patron
I was blessed with a bardic fire
Unmatched in inspiration.
I sang of your history
Your bond to the Land
And your Lady
You fired the awen in me
Easily my most productive year
Of poetry
You never knew
What you did for me
If a publisher ever chooses
A piece of mine to print
It will be because
Of you.
No one else
Loved as you did
A King of Oak, with a
Lions heart
Who recalled the bond
Of a Land to Her people
And let your blood tie you
To that sacred role
You burned so bright
A Realm healed in
The light of your love.
I recall our foreshortened games
The meetings and parties you hosted
The late night conversations
War plans and strategies
The passion you had for so many things
And the brighter one for her
That bloomed with every kiss.
I never knew such love
But it only ever grew joy
In my heart to bear it witness.
I have regrets that I did not
Seek out your hearth
In the decades between
Though our afternoon at
The court of Daffodil
Was a flash of all those old joys
You were still you
She is still she
And I will ever be your bard
And I know
You knew it, always.
I miss you,
And always will.

A Magic Moment at An Tir - West War

While my memories of His Grace were various over the 30+ years I was privileged to be in his company, the first time I experienced a Magic Moment in the SCA was due to him. The occasion was just one reason I was honoured to call him friend.

The first time it happened was on the Saturday morning before the battle. The King alighted a resplendent horse drawn chariot. The Queen mounted a chestnut steed. Escorted by their Royal Retinue, the Crowns of An Tir processed through the entire camp rallying the troops to battle. To hear His Majesty’s proud voice boom to His subjects “An Tir to War!” and to see the beauty in Her Majesty’s graceful smile was inspiring.

Walking behind Their Royal Majesties, I looked behind me as we turned a corner in the path, to see a never-ending line of An Tirians who had joined our procession to the field in response to the battle cry. I hadn’t known just how large the entourage behind us had grown. It felt incredible to know that there exists such overwhelming support for An Tir, and to realize that I was proud to be a part in the making of An Tir history. Goose bumps raised the hair on my arms and a shiver went up my spine. This was the first time I had experienced a truly ‘magic moment’ in the SCA. This was why I had answered “yes” when asked if I wanted to be part of a Royal Retinue. Little did I know what was in store when I first uttered that small but powerful word, and that there would be many more ‘magic moments’ to come.

I give thanks to Dux Darius Corvinus and Cometessa Morgaine Brigantia for asking me to be part of their Retinue. The magic couldn’t have happened without them.

AVE DARIUS!

His Grace was the very FIRST royal peer I encountered when I joined Eisenmarche. He came to be what I looked for in a royal peer...austere and intimidating but understanding and gracious.

He was also one of the first to put a sword in my hand. I won't forget those lessons or the memories of my time with him. Vivat Dux Darius!

I have always held him in the highest regard. They gave me my AoA and it meant so much to me. Much love to the whole family. ❤️

I recall, many moons ago, AS 32 at very wet Sealion war way, way up Island, myself, Janette aka Evangelina and David aka Cal Raven Finn were one of the wet and wonderful crew that were there that day. I had a mission. I had found out that one Allan Bean had brought his clan tartan to that lunared orb. You can guess where this is going...so on behalf the clan McBean, I asked for the moon. His expression was priceless. After some frantic consultation he present to us what portion of the moon was his to give. He gave us cheese. Funny as all get out. I still have the scroll.
