Event Highlights
Kingdom Champion Results
Sir Octamasades bested Viscount Vik in a straight two in a a best two out of three in the finals to become the Champion of An Tir. Viscount Vik bested Sir Kjartan in the Semi-finals, and Sir Octamasades got the bye into the final.
Laurel Ceremonies
The Final Court of Sven and Signy came around about 2pm. In due time, the Laurels were called up, and someone I didn't recognize was put on vigil--then it was Sven Odin Eye's turn.
Ciaran Cluana Ferta slipped into Court behind the thrones to act as Their Majesties' herald; Master Grendal, Mistress Isrith, and I waited at the back. When the time came, Grendal came in with us behind him, repeating the declaration he had made the previous night before the Thrones before witnesses, stating our differences with the Crown. Several of the Laurels looked completely shocked, as were a number of the populace, and he had to explain, "This is done in accordance with Norse law." I and then Isrith declared ourselves witnesses to posting the grievance, and then we each stated our case before the Crown. Sven (the King) looked very thoughtful, and after a moment's consideration said, "You have pled your case well. We have indeed been remiss, and must rectify this immediately." With that, he called our Sven into Court, where the elevation proceeded in the usual way.
Sven's Laurel medallion and scroll were designed and crafted by Aedan macSuibne (current Stromgard A&S Champion). He was given a beautiful Laurel cloak designed and made by Isrith, as a token "of the affection and respect of your friends." Sven had asked to borrow my circlet, so when the time came, I stepped forward with it held high: "This circlet has been graced by the hands of the Crown in elevating Dame Guiliana Benevoli and Mestra Rafaella d'Allemtejo," and then held it for Queen Signy. Sven swore his fealty on the sword of his forefathers (it has been in his modern family for 150 years), and thus he arose a Laurel of the Known World.
Right after, Griffon the Black (one of Master Julian's aracarii, Master Julian having passed late last month) was called in and elevated. There were more than a few tears shed, and Master Andras (at one time also one of Julian's arcarii and best friend) acted as Griffon's primary sponsor. Master Andras kept breaking down, and requested assistance with the final words of Julian which were given to him from his deathbed. King Sven graciously offered to read those words, doing so with emotion and dignity, and amongst tears and joy, Griffon arose a Laurel.

Great weather, warm but site had nice grassy tree-shade. Many merchants -- located across the highway! Although we had crossing guards (thank-you), the highway was an unwelcome reminder of the modern world every time we had to cross.
I very much liked the layout of the activity "courts" around the eric.
Where did that fabbo "royal pavilion" come from? It was beautiful. I must say Their (new) Majesties are very attractively royal-looking. She's tall and slender with long blond hair and a kind and wise face. He's also got long hair and a noble salt-and-pepper beard and smiles a lot. Their simple linen 15th coronation clothes were marvellous. Her hem puddled around her feet just like in the medieval manuscripts. I found myself counting all the buttons on their sleeves while I was up swearing fealty. (Bad Peer.)
If you didn't have to get up for any particular reason, I'll bet the heraldic wake-up calls were right annoying. Especially the one with the whistle.
Their Majesties have two young sons, Gryphon and Phoenix; about 5 and 7 years old. They were invested as Princes Royal during the Coronation Ceremony. It started off with a procession of a "guard" of youngsters, clad in simple armour, mail, and chaperon hoods. They marched into Court in a double file, in order of size, tallest at the front. At a word, they stopped in front of the thrones and (very smartly) turned to face each other. When the young princes were called forward, the junior guard formed an arched tunnel with their boffer swords for the Princes to walk through. It was dead charming. The Princes Royal were invested with "...all of the rights and none of the responsibilities" of being royal.
Yurt Girled with Isolde and Godytha. Ate at Sushi Sam's -- twice! Finally met Sylverstone in person. Bought some wool and orangy-red linen fabric at Pastiche. Got to schmooze with friends I don't get to see very often. Wore my new red Flemish kirtle for the first time. (On Sunday I was wearing it inside out because it was dark in the yurt when I put it on!)
Ferry lineup was fairly long on the way home, but mostly in the shade.

First off, I would like to thank the autocrat staff and especially the merchantcrat, Lord Brummbar, for a most wonderful event. The sun was shining, though not too brightly, the winds were light and cooling, and the populace that I saw were full of smiles. Lord Brummbar did a most excellent job of making sure that everyone could find merchants, even those of us tucked away in niches on the row.

I was unable to attend coronation itself, but felt priviledged when King Amalric and Queen Caia progressed through Merchants Row late on Saturday evening. To have a King and Queen who took the time to visit the row and be seen by many who were unable to attend coronation itself was wonderful and really made me feel like they cared for everyone in the SCA, even those of us who chose to merchant.

Lovely event, fantastic view of the water from our campsite. Had late afternoon tea at the Tea House, lovely get away from the heat. Merchants were fun. I never get to see them usually. I got to work at gate for several hours late Friday night. Gate bingo!
Their Majesties did look spiffy. While EB was counting buttons, I was admiring the hand finished button holes. Amazing cooperative effort on their clothing. Almost everything was handcrafted for them - pewter buttons, cords, veils...what an effort. Each garment had at least 5 people contributing from custom patterns, hand finished hems and button holes, handmade buttons, to stockings and braes! HL Annisa_Gabrielli and Mistress Anne-Marie_d'Ailleurs led an incredible team of artisians.
Prince Royals' and their guard were charming and so proud. Mistress Ariel de Courtney, Sir Martin le Harpur, and Sir Rapheal the Rogue did a great job of wrangling them into military order.
The Royal Pavilion is from the Summits. In another configuration, it is commonly known as the Summits Sky Cathedral. Master Matheus Bane should get full kudos for it.

Can I just say how much I enjoyed this new format event. It was so much fun to be able to chat to the people involved, it made the experience so much richer.
I've also got to say that it was incredibly wonderful to see so many people all showing interest in the A&S tent at the same time - a really vibrant display.

Truly, it was wonderful to have a casual atmosphere to chat with the various artisans and share their pleasure in their work.

I concur completely and hope that similar things can be done at other events. The only problem was that it was almost too successful - so many attended that more space would have been really nice.

The Royal Pavilion at Coronation was amazing. No overgrown tent on steroids. This was a thing of beauty.
It seems that Master Bane and Mistress Meagan Windemere (an architect-engineer team) designed this pavilion for their own use but graciously lent it to the Crown.
Picture an open framework structure, with beautiful Gothic arches and a delicate frame, draped with light fabric at the back. The structure really has to be seen to be fully appreciated--it looks so weightless that it could float away. It's amazing, and I understand that it all comes down easily, stacks flat, and takes but a few hours to put up. Not bad, and so worth the effort.
The design is so successful that I found myself pondering the marriage of architectural design and the kind of music which would have graced it. It looked for all the world like a Gothic cathedral without all the stone--a pavilion of light. Beautiful.
