The barony hosts a wide variety of regular functions, ranging from socials to practices to business meetings. The type and details of meetings may vary over time to accommodate the needs and desires of the community; always check the baronial website for the most up-to-date information; this information is usually available on the Calendar page.

History

In answer to a question According to Master Robyrt of Watersyde, "Aquaterra was granted an incipient Shire status in August of 1981. Elevated to Shire at September Crown 1981. This happened so fast because the Kingdom Seneschal was a very good friend of my older Daughter, Lady Amber."

Aquaterra became a Barony on September 1st, AS XXXI/1996.

Awards

Service Awards

This is a first level service award. The person being considered to receive this award should have played in the Barony for a minimum of a year and have consistently participated in work parties, volunteered for event functions such as gate, constabulary, marshaling, etc., been willing to do set up and/or take down for events and other functions, and just generally been ready and able to offer a helping hand without being prodded.

  • Order of the Golden Estoile (formerly called the Order of the Star Fish)

This is the second level service award. A person being considered to receive this award has probably played with the Barony more than five years and has consistently given of his or her time and talents during that entire time. This person may have held several offices or autocratted many events or cooked many feasts, or may even have been a member of the Sergeantry for several years. He or she should have already received a Silver Dolphin.

This is a new award and is regarded as a third level service award. We do not expect to give out more than 3 or 4 of these awards during any 12-month period of time. The person being considered for this award would have a long history of consistent selfless service to the Barony and would probably already have been given a Silver Dolphin and a Golden Estoille or have performed an unusual and outstanding service which was beyond the usual level of expectation of one of our members.

Arts and Science Awards

  • Order of the Plate (formerly called the Order of the Sand Dollar)

This is the first level arts and sciences award. Again, a person who is being considered for this award should have been playing with the Barony for at least 12 months and is always ready to contribute to the beauty of events through decorations, the knowledge base of the Barony through participating in arts and sciences contests and/or through teaching his or her skills to others.

This is the second level arts and sciences award. A person who is being considered for this award should have already received a Plate and have played with the Barony for more than five years. He or she should have a long history of consistently being available to teach or otherwise share his or her skills or knowledge. He or she has probably held office as Baronial scribe, herald, minister of arts and sciences, or one of the deputy positions such as bardic or dance deputy. He or she may have won championships within our own or other branches, or taught Ithra classes. He or she may have made items of regalia. He or she may be a Courtier within the Sergeantry for several years.

This is another new award and is the third level arts and sciences award. Again, we do not expect to give out more than 3 or 4 of these awards during any 12-month period of time. The person being considered for this award would have a long history of consistent selfless artistic service to the Barony and would probably already have been given a plate and a Blue Stag or have exhibited an unusual and outstanding talent or knowledge base beyond the usual level of expectation of one of our members. He or She would have taken joy in sharing the fruits of his or her labors for the glory of the Barony by providing regalia items and/or event prizes. He or she would spend time helping others become proficient within the arts and sciences of the middle ages.

Youth Awards

(Youth awards are available only to those who are less than 16 years of age and have played with the Barony for more than a year)

This is a service award. The youth who is being considered for this award would be one who actively volunteers to help others by doing such tasks as water-bearing, running errands, and helping set up or take down event sites.

This is an arts and sciences award. The youth who is being considered for this award is not only interested in creating arts and sciences items and entering arts and sciences competitions, but also is willing to teach his or her skills to others.

This is a new award given for chivalry. The youth who is being considered for this award displays all the courtesy, care and honor expected from a gentle person, not only for those who are older but also to his peers. Many of our young people know and are willing to extend the proper forms of address, exemplary manners, and great respect to those around them, and we feel that this attitude should not only be encouraged, but should be celebrated.

Other Awards

  • Order of the Falcon's Talon

This order was created by our Founding Baron, Julian Edward Farnsworth of Falconmoors, OL, as the highest honor to be bestowed upon a person by the Coronets of Aquaterra. It is given only at Good Yule and is awarded to a single person each year. This is a polling Order and members who have been inducted into the Order extend their recommendation to Their Excellencies who make the final decision based upon those recommendations. The Order represents a lifetime achievement of service and devotion within and to the Barony of Aquaterra. Recommendations for this Order from the populace who are not members may be given to any current member of the Order.

  • Merchant Commendation

The Merchant Commendation is given by the Coronets of the Barony of Aquaterra upon the recommendation of other merchants and is meant to recognize those merchants who contribute to the overall quality of events, especially those held in Aquaterra. To be eligible to receive this award the merchant should have gone above the average effort to provide a booth with proper medieval atmosphere, offer for sale goods that reflect the SCA period, served repeatedly as a Merchantcrat, gone beyond the expected level in serving customers, SCA and modern alike, in a courteous and helpful manner, or any other like manner of service to enjoyment and smooth running of the event.

  • Barons Favor

Given by the Baron to denote his favor.

  • Baronesses Favor

Given by the Baroness to denote her favor.

  • Coronets Favor

Given jointly by the Baron and Baroness to denote the favor of the coronets.

  • Citizen

  • Order of the Wild Man

Retired Awards

  • Order of the Geoduck

This order, created by Baron Julian as a tongue-in-cheek award, was given to those who verbally put their foot in a mud hole and continued to dig deeper and deeper as they tried to explain their way back out of it. The award was retired by Baron Andreu on 01/26/03.
