Clan Carn is a mercenary war household in the Western Region of An Tir.

About Clan Carn

Clan Carn was founded in A.S. XXVI at the first Autumn War, and is based loosely on the Scottish Clans of the 16th Century, combining elements from both the Highland and Lowland traditions. Our membership is composed primarily of Scots, Irish and Welsh but open to any persona from any period, and includes Italian, German, English and Norse personae.

We are a war Clan with a force that includes heavies, lights and (at times) siege engines. Our fight company is inclusive, meaning that anyone who is of the appropriate age, by SCA rules, and has the inclination to fight is welcome to train and take to the war field with the Clan.

There are many aspects to life in the SCA, war is just one of them. The Clan is involved in a variety of different activities including:

rapier combat
target archery
costuming
combat archery
tournament fighting
music
equestrian activity
various arts and sciences
service

Structure of Clan Carn

Traditionally, the household has had two different structures, a war unit (for structure on the field), and the internal household organization (for structure in all other things).

Household Structure

The household is made of the members of all levels. At first, there were just members, but to try and handle some explosive growth while retaining the culture, membership levels were added. Most anyone is welcome to hang out. Those interested can become Manrents, which is expressing interest. There was no requirement or expectation that one had to go past this stage. Manrents are allowed to bear a household manrent favor.

If desired, one could seek to advance to Clannet, by completing a minimum required number of camping events and service (to the household and/or the society), and getting a sponsor (preferably someone you don't know well) and an alternate. Once requirements were met, a vote was held at one of our raising events (Autumn War or our Spring Feast).

Likewise, one could advance from Clannet to full member. A further amount of camping events and service is required. Full members get the household member favor (with the dogknot), and can vote in meetings.

The Clan Chief is the head of the household. The council consisted of the Clan Cheif and two council members, selected by vote from those putting their names forth. The council made decisions for the household.

Additional, Carn had officer positions such as Exchequer, Secretary, Engineer, Games Master, and so forth.

As we've aged and went somewhat dormant, many of these positions also went dormant. Additionally, changes have been made to the membership structure - Clannet was removed, requirements were simplified. New members, and returning old members, are bringing new life to Carn.

War Band Structure

The Clan Chief is the head of the warband.

When Carn was fielding a very large warband, we had sections of the line (lances), including a reserve lance and fast lance. We had two lieutenants under the Clan Chief, a banner bearer, and corporals for each lance. They were tasked with taking over if higher leader was out of commission (or not at the event), and relaying commands and using initiative as needed.

At the moment, Carn's field presence can typically be handled with one or two commanders, and the sub officer positions are largely dormant.

Household Awards

Carn has, over time, given out various internal awards, for both accomplishments on and off the field. Some have fallen by the wayside as the group has grown or shrunk, or changed in attitude, but others have endured, and new ones have been invented.

The Banner Bearer is a honor that was bestowed yearly to the dog soldier that was the most rabid on the field, in any martial discipline. Their arms are added to the Carn war banner pole, and they carry the war banner on the march out to the field. Additionaly, they are ranked between lieutenants and corporals. Currently, the award is bestowed as is decided at need.

The Carn Pelican medallion is passed to each new pelican in the house, and a lamp-work bead in their colors is added to the medallion's necklace. The holders have been: Althaia fillia Lazari, Alessandra da Montefeltro, Gera Gangolffin, Tymme Lytefelow, John de Percy, Steven Desjardin, Anghard verch Reynulf, Kathryn MacKim
