The An Tir Kingdom Bardic Championship historically was generally held on the fourth weekend of September. Since XLIV/2010, it has been held in conjunction with the Kingdom Arts and Sciences Championship, and is held on the first weekend of March. Entrants competing for Kingdom Bardic Champion must prepare three historical pieces with full documentation to present before panels of judges.

Additionally, others may enter their items as single pieces, in order to display their skills, get a taste of the process, and receive feedback on how they are progressing.

As this event involves the selection of a Royal Champion, despite sometimes being relatively small in size, it is a Kingdom level event.

From XLIV / 2010 to ??, the event has been combined with the An Tir Kingdom A&S Championship, which is an event similar in design, but specifically for non-performing arts and research.

From ?? to LVIII / 2023, the event has been combined with An Tir Collegium, a teaching event.

Starting in LX/2025, the event will be moved to Twelfth Night, and the format will be changed so that bards may compete for points throughout the year, with the top scorers competing at Twelfth Night.
