Greetings from Donwenna, I have been asked to forward this to the sca-equine list so that everyone may know of the great deeds done at the first Emprise of the Sable Rose (An Tir). The Company of the Sable Rose Argent is a part of the Rose Companies which started in Trimaris under the auspices of Duchess Elspeth and the Captain of the Company, Baroness Aurora. The goal was to bring forth the Virtues of Chivalry on the field (I have included our version of the induction ceremony we use in An Tir). The members of the Rose Companies are primarily Equestrians and Rapier; in some kingdoms, we include archers and support personel. The Members work together to display these Virtues before the Ladies of the Berfrois in Honor of them. The Berfrois is peopled by many notables, many of whom are Patronesses and Patrons of the Rose Companies. In turn, these notables support and promote the efforts of the equestrian and rapier activities within the kingdom. For more info go to Companies of the Sable Rose

Wonderful displays of chivalry, joy in riding, camaraderie and pageantry by the riders and their retinues. I was stunned at the superb decorations; I think that Aquaterra under Baroness Rosamund certainly out did themselves this time. Our out of Kingdom Guests were profoundly impressed. Horses and people strutted their stuff for the Berfrois.... then came the competition...
The mirrored challenge course was pure fun and added such an element of thrill and spectacle!
For those who weren't there, you'll see pictures and videos, but a brief description: the arena was split in half. Two challengers were called to the field. The idea was that each rider start at either end and meet in the center at the barrier which separated the 'jousting lanes' for the speed quintain. I think, every element had 1 point (i.e., 1 point for each weave and head, birja, quintain revolutions) plus 4 points if you got to the speed quintain first. The top winners of each round ran against each other till the field was totally eliminated to the champion. Giraldus and Thorkel were on their third (?) run thru the course and by then they & their mounts sure knew what they were doing!!! The entire competition lasted less than an hour and the scoring was lightening fast. Baroness Anastasia did scoring as she has done for several equestrian events over the last couple of years. I have never seen a field of riders run thru so quickly. It was super exciting to watch. And the crowd went wild as the competitors raced for the speed quintain.
Afterwards, while the scores were tallied, the mounted crest melee was quite the crowning glory as the riders gleefully bashed at one another. ;'>
