An original song by Amnara the Savage, Armiger, about the tale of the Pelican and what it means in the SCA. Inspired by His Lordship Etolé Marchant and all the folk of the Towne of KeyPoynt who have shown what strong and true sacrifice looks like. ❣

Lyrics:

The white bird has a tale to tell
So pray attend, I know it well
Grief only sacrifice could quell
The power of such piety
A white bird nursing her sick young
Her mate already did succumb
No more will their tale be unsung
Hear her words now spoke through me:

"Oh, my children, do not fear
Look to me, I'll hold you dear
I know the world can be unjust
But I will do what I must
And if you'll grow both strong and true
Your young will one day look to you
Then you'll understand what it is I do
When I do what I must"

The white bird, she mourned for her mate
And prayed their young would not share his fate
But the illness was so great
Her young grew cold and still
She wept that they would not survive
Would not grow strong and true and thrive
And with a heart all too alive
She found a deeper will

"Oh, my children, do not fear
Look to me, I'll hold you dear
I know the world can be unjust
But I will do what I must
And if you'll grow both strong and true
Your young will one day look to you
Then you'll understand what it is I do

"There is nothing I would not give
That these young lives may live
In this mercy now I trust
For I will do what I must"

The white bird did not show distress
She cooed to silent babes in nest
Then tore at her lily white breast
Her chicks did revive and feed
Warm nourishment they questioned not
Their bellies full, they soon forgot
The miracle sharp beak had wrought
How a mother's heart can bleed

"Oh, my children, do not fear
Look to me, I'll hold you dear
I know the world can be unjust
So I will do what I must
Should you grow both strong and true
Your young will one day look to you
Then you'll understand what it is I do"

And so it is with those who care
Who give of themselves, dream, and dare
To see a world they can repair
By the work of their own hands
The first to help with pen or blade
Or any other means they've made
To see a need and render aid
Simply because they can

Because they understand
Why she said

"No, my children, do not fear
Look to me, I'll hold you dear
Yes, the world can be unjust
So I will do what I must
You will grow both strong and true
And one day your young will look to you
Then you'll understand what it is I do
The sacrifice both strong and true
You will no what it is I do
When I do what I must"
