Valerian is a Cossack mercenary based within the town of Tana near the mouth of the Don River in Ukraine. They were born in 1482, just after the Golden Hoard fell, to parents fleeing from serfdom into the Don Steppes as Grand Prince Ivan III began increasingly restricting movement and attaching workers to the land and landowners. They learned to ride and hunt as a necessity for survival and developed a self-governing and self-sufficient community with other groups on the steppes. They occasionally join with other members in bands for raids, either on attack or defense, for resources such as spices, livestock, or other valuables from the Ottoman and Tatar settlements nearby. They ended up in Tana after being hired to protect a shipment and finding good paying guard positions in town and occasionally on ships sailing across the Black Sea.
Food: Three meals a day. Hunting, fishing. Gathering honey, root vegetables, and fresh greens. Rye, millet, buckwheat grains. Spices from trade and raids. Livestock (horses, sheep, goats) for meat and dairy. Water, broth, or fermented dairy for drinking.
