Prionsa and Banphrionsa

Gaelic for “Prince” and “Princess”.

According to Theodulf of Borogrove, during the early years of the Principality of An Tir, as a result of the influence of Deirdre Muldomhnaigh, who loved the Gaelic language and culture and whose father, Dr. Thomas E. Downey of Seattle University, taught Irish language classes open to the SCA, the titles of Prince and Princess were replaced with “Prionsa n’An Tir and Banphrionsa n’An Tir.”

Scroll showing signatories titles as Prionsa n’An Tir and Banphrionsa n’An Tir. AS IX (1974).
