Æffe Michælesdohtor (AFF-fa MY-kal-es-DOH-tor) lives in Blatha an Oir. She first joined the SCA in 1993, and played for ten years before leaving in 2003. She returned in 2021, just as the Covid lockdowns were easing, and jumped back in with both feet.
In her first ten years, she served as both Listmistress and Chronicler of Blatha an Oir, and was awarded the Golden Blossom and inducted into the Order of the Briar. She frequently volunteered for Gate and as a waterbearer on the erics, and occasionally served as field or court Herald. Her persona at this time was 12th-century Scottish, and she used (though did not register) the name Aibhinn ingen Eoin mhic Dhomnaill (EE-fynn EEN-yen YOAN-yeh vic DHOV-nall).
When Æffe returned to the SCA, she chose an Anglo-Saxon persona from ninth-century Jorvik (modern York, England). Her persona, the wife of a blacksmith, is a Saxon woman living under the Danelaw.
Æffe's main focus in the SCA is Service. She took on the post of Blatha an Oir's Webminister in July 2021. In 2022, she began working with the Livestream crew, first as a camera operator & communications, then later as onsite coordinator for several big events, including Twelfth Night 2023. In 2024, she took on the position of Kingdom Livestream Co-lead. She still serves in both of those positions.
Æffe is fascinated by Anglo-Saxon history, with a specific interest in the spread of Roman Christianity in seventh-century Britain and its conflicts with the already-extant Celtic Christianity brought over by missionaries from Ireland. She plans to present for the first time at Æthenaeum 2025 on this subject.
Æffe is also fond of various fiber arts, including crochet (out of period, but fun!), knitting, and inkle weaving. She is learning card weaving as well, and is hoping to re-learn nalbinding.
She is probably best known in An Tir for her "Bards of the World" series, a weekly post on Facebook highlighting the songs, dances, or poetry of different cultures around the world and throughout history. She posted these during her time as Blatha an Oir's Bardic Champion, May 2023-May 2024.
You can find Æffe's current list of awards at the An Tir Order of Precedence.
