Major Events

Daffodil Tournament - Originally held in February (Valentines Day), was premier An Tir tournament of the season. Traditionally the winner went on to become An Tir sovereign. Later moved to March to avoid conflict with Estrella War and to improve weather expectations. Advent of Ursulmas in January removed 'premier' status. Held at James Bay Community Center for many years. As numbers grew was moved to Bay Street armouries twice and then to Saanich Fairgrounds. Two Daffodils (2003, 2004) held at Sanscha Hall in Sidney. Returned to Saanich Fairgrounds when Sanscha Hall reduced Non-profit discount dramatically.
Sealion War Originally held on Easter weekend as Bitterwaters (Salt Spring) War. The annual war between Lions Gate and Seagirt. Early date was designed to weed out the lesser hardy people and provide for a truly fierce war. Bitterwaters became unpopular in early 90's mostly due to weather and some political fall-out. Was replaced by Bog War (1990) in Lions Gate with the idea that the event should then move back and forth annually to be fair. 1993 was renamed Sealion War and held later in the year to avoid weather (first mid June war). As event was held at Taylor Arm (autocrat James Llewellyn ap Gruffydd) passed Port Alberni it poured. 1993 was final attempt to return to traditonal Bitterwaters site but met with much strife and bad weather. Sealion became current form in 1996. With advent of Barony status, war points discussed and agreed upon annually by both coronets prior to acceptance. Traditionally Lions Gate war points passed at LG council. Seagirt war points approved by B&B only. When Tir Righ Investiture moved into May in 2004, Seagirt claimed the second weekend in June as the war date.
Seagirt Sergeants Trials - First trials held in 1999 at South Vancouver Island Ranger Station (autocrat James Llewellyn ap Gruffydd). Tried in August a few times opposite Lions Gates Sgts. Thereafter moved to July and held at Camp Barnard. Now held on last FULL weekend in July.
SST Originally called Seagirt SECRET Tournament. Desire was to have a tournament where a LOCAL person would win a title and be responsible for championing their cause here at home all year long. Original rules stated winner could NOT succeed themselves. - August
Seagirt Yule - December
