Beatrice at Northshield Crown Tournament, March, 2023

Magnifica Beatrice Domenici della Campana (pronounced Bay-uh-TREE-chay Doh-MEN-uh-chee dell-uh Come-PAH-nuh) was born and raised on the lace-making island of Burano, just outside Venice, in the mid to late 15th century.

Within the Current Middle Ages, Beatrice is interested in Heraldry, scribal arts, sewing, pattern drafting, music, dance, madrigals, regalia, precedence and protocol, cooking, mead-making, inter-Kingdom anthropology, Tudor history, Venetian history, jewelry making, whitesmithing, heraldic display.

Beatrice started her time in the Society in the Shire of Coeur du Val, and moved from there to (the then Shire of) Dragon's Mist. During her time in An Tir, she primarily served and worked as a herald, including a term as Dexter Gauntlet Herald. From A.S. XXXIX through XLI, she served as Kingdom Chatelaine. She was also at various times a warranted Senior Constable and a Junior (non-authorizing) Marshal for heavy combat.

In A.S. XLI (2007), Beatrice moved to the Midrealm, and from there in A.S. XLVIII (2013) to the Kingdom of Northshield, where she now resides in the Barony of Caer Anterth Mawr (Milwaukee, WI).

Beatrice prefers to be surprised for awards and being called into Court (if you can manage to surprise an experienced and suspicious court herald...).

Registered Armory

Image shows a heraldic shield divided in half horizontally, top white, bottom gold. A gold rose is above the division and a white rose is below.
Beatrice's primary arms, Per fess argent and Or, two roses counterchanged.

Beatrice's current primary arms, Per fess argent and Or, two roses counterchanged, were registered under an Individually Attested Pattern, documented to mid-sixteenth century Venice via Italian armorials. Since registering these arms, pictures/emblazons heraldically identical to these registered arms have been found in two separate late period Venetian armorials.

Beatrice has two sets of "ancient arms" (this term isn't technically used for individuals, only for branches, but these are badges that were at one point Beatrice's primary arms):
Per pall inverted argent, azure, and sable
Argent, a lion rampant contourny sable, in chief two roses azure each charged with a rose argent.

The second of these "ancient arms" can be found on the armorial display Roll of Arms of the Barony of Dragon's Mist, added when Beatrice was resident in Dragon's Mist from A.S. XXXV through XLI (modernly 2000-2007). These are also the arms shown on her An Tir Order of Precedence entry and the An Tir Roll of Arms.

Beatrice has the following registered badges (with purposes listed in parentheses):

(Fieldless) A rose per pale argent and azure (generally used to mark personal possessions and associates)
(Fieldless) A hawk's bell argent (generally used as a token or favor)
(Fieldless) A compass rose per pale argent and azure (associated with her household)

Beatrice has an additional (Italian IAP) badge in submission, which she expects to be decided on the February 2025 LoAR (due to be published around April, 2025).

Beatrice's livery colors are royal blue and silver.

Registered Names

Beatrice has an alternate persona with the registered name Beatrice Bell, a noblewoman in the court of Elizabeth I of England.

Beatrice has a household, the House of the Compass Rose

Beatrice has submitted her personal heraldic title, Ruosa Zalla Araldo. This is a Venetian title, which means "Gold Rose Herald", and it is not yet registered.

Order of Precedence

A white woman with auburn hair stands with her back to the viewer, her head turned so it can be seen in profile. Her hair is pulled back in a low bun, and she is smiling. She is wearing a high-collared red velveteen coat, the back of which is embroidered with a white pelican in its piety surrounded by a gold wreath.
Beatrice in her Pelican coat (construction and embroidery by Sisuile Butler of the East). The wreath around the embroidered Pelican on the back contains symbols of her primary service--a griffin for Northshield, a lion for An Tir, crossed trumpets for Heraldry, and an apple for the University of Atlantia.

Magnifica Beatrice is a member of the Order of the Pelican, and prefers the Venetian title. If using English titles, she prefers "Dame".

Beatrice's current Order of Precedence listing is kept by the Kingdom of Northshield, and you can find it on her Northshield profile.

Her An Tir Order of Precedence listing, which does not include her awards and honors from outside of An Tir, can be found here.

Arts

Beatrice is a scribe, both an illuminator and a calligrapher, and samples of her scribal work can be found in the Northshield Scribal Gallery at the bottom of her Northshield profile.

Beatrice is a costumer and makes most of her own garb as well as teaching others. While her primary area of expertise is late 15th century Italian women's clothing, including the sumptuary laws of Venice in this era, she has secondary expertise in 1570's Elizabethan English women's clothing, and has made clothing from a wide variety of SCA periods and cultures, including Norse/Viking, 14th century English/French, late-period Ottoman/Persian, and 11-13th century Western European.

Beatrice has made silk heraldic banners and fans with modern methods (silk dye and gutta) for SCA heraldic display.

Beatrice is a dancer, mostly of SCA-taught English Country, 15th century Italian, and 16th century Italian dance. She also teaches dance, and was honored to be able to lead a Newcomer's Ball at Gulf Wars in 2024.

Beatrice is a bard, primarily a vocalist, and some of her performances have been recorded by Viscountess Elashava bas Riva of Northshield for her SCA Bardic focused YouTube channel ShavaSue.

Heraldic Research

Beatrice has researched and documented for submission nine pieces of armory under the Individually Attested Pattern rules. Five of these have been high-complexity Tudor armory, and four have been low-contrast Italian armory. She has also taught classes on the pattern of high-complexity Tudor armory, and continues research into both these armorial practices.

For her heraldic title submission, Beatrice researched and documented the Italian-language equivalent for "Herald" -- Araldo -- as it was used in late-period Florence and Venice. Rather than relying on a modern language dictionary translation, she was able to find references to the use of Araldo by or in reference to working heralds, either from those cultures or who visited as diplomats.

She has also taught classes specifically for newcomers to our Society.

During and since the plague years, Beatrice has been involved in ethereal events across the Known World, and her contributions as staff and instructor for those events can be found here.

Scribal Preferences

One of our scribes pointed out that persons should list their favorite flowers and bugs and fruit and vegetables to make things easier for the scribes.
Therefore:
Roses (especially heraldic in blue and white), carnations, lilac, lavender, anything on the cooler side of the spectrum (blue, purple, white, bluish reds, but not yellows and oranges usually). Bees and dragonflies and ladybugs and butterflies. Apples, pears, any sort of berry or melon. Broccoli, spinach, winter squash, carrots, parsnips, peas, green beans, and asparagus.
Beatrice generally prefers mid- to late-period scrolls (no runic, please), but has no particular preferences as to time, place, or style within that preference. As a scribe herself, she is especially fond of receiving scrolls where a scribe has dived deep down the rabbit hole to create something they are passionate about.
