Persona Bio
My name is Shahzade Nisaburi the artist, and I go by Shahzia. I was born on the last day of Ramadan in the year 724 according to the followers of Muhammad. Currently it is the year 1363 according to the Christian calendar, 764 according to the Islamic calendar, but my family is Zoroastrian, so the date is 732 Yazata (year). I was born in the town of Nishapur, in Khorasan. To the West of my birthplace, Pope Urban V has recently been crowned, but in Avignon, not Rome. In the East, Sultan Mu’izz-uddin Husayn, from a Sunni family called the Kartids, rules from his seat of power in Herat. We have heard of a violent and powerful warlord who has risen to power and threatens our homelands, a man they call Timur the Lame.
My ancestors were from the area of Nishapur, and narrowly escaped with their lives when the Mongolian Army slaughtered the entire city over a hundred and forty years ago. They fled far into the mountains but returned to settle in Mashhad. I was born in Nishapur by chance as my parents were there for an extended amount of time, building a shipment of turquoise to bring back to Mashhad. At the time, Nishapur was more of a settlement than even a town. Horrible memories surrounded that city, the skulls of men, women and even children were piled as high as mountains by the Mongolian horde. I hear the population is growing, but the area is plagued by Earthquakes.
21 years ago my father joined the Sultan, a Malik at the time, in a great battle against the neighboring Sarbadars. Men died, but ultimately our Army was victorious. My father is a skilled swordsman, but he makes his way in life as an artist and our family is relatively well off. He uses turquoise to make jewelry in his workshop, as well as fine paintings.
My mother tends our large household and all of my younger siblings. We have a small estate with everything a family would need, horses, land for growing, and a stream to collect water. My mother weaves fine rugs, instructs us on making our clothing and food, writes poetry, and dances. She is also just as skilled at horseback riding as my father. She collects soot black and makes a fine ink for drawings, but also uses the ink to make permanent markings for people. She has marked each of her girls with fine black dots on our cheeks and foreheads, or lines on our chins. She has symbols tattooed on her hands and thighs, done by her grandmother many years ago.
We have a large family. My older sister and four of my younger sisters are married and live in the home of their husbands' families. One sister was stricken down by an illness, and yet another went missing some time ago when she refused to marry and traveled to another city. The eldest brother is in additional schooling, and will choose a wife soon. The rest of my siblings are too young.
I was married, but my husband was killed a few years ago when his horse spooked and he fell into a ravine, crushing his spine. I am too old to re-marry, and I have chosen instead to pursue art. We had yet to have children, so my husbands family received half of our possessions, and I also received half. My mother in law was kind to me, and my family understood my passion for learning and for the arts, so I was allowed to travel to the Western Kingdoms in order to learn more. One day I may return to Mashhad to continue my work in artistic trades.
