Peer Fear

The phenomenom that occurs when members of the populace feel that they cannot approach members of the peerage. This can be because they feel they are not "worthy," that the peer is too "busy," or even that peers are just plain mean. Like anyone else, peers are people too and often what is perceieved as unapproachablility is either shyness or intense focus on another task.

Tips for approaching a peer:

  • Find an appropriate moment - not in line for the bathroom, not while their mouth is full, not while they are looking harried (unless you can help)
  • Offer to help with their current task - carry a basket, help put up a tent, give directions
  • Ask a pointed and interesting question about what they are doing. "oh, I always thought lace was so complicated. You make it look easy...how long have you been doing this?
  • Smile!
  • Try, try again...
