My Lords and Ladies,

Baronial banquet is only a memory but I think one that will last for a long time. For those who missed it, our amazing cook Shareef received the mortar and pestle award from the Baron and Baroness for the most memorable food they had recieved this year and the quote of the night for our hall, "This decorating is amazing, the best I have ever seen in the SCA."

(I sure hope someone got some pictures to share. )

Some of the many I own thanks:

Decorating:

  • Fiona for supervising
  • Ealeen and Kenneth, who assisted for five hours even though neither would actually be at the event, Adam and Ayleth, David of Tiraine who got the unpleasant job of hauling off all the site garbage as we were not allowed to use the hall dumpster (future autocrats make note).
  • Kimberly who created the castle mural and worked hard from 9am when we opened the site to 1am when we closed it.
  • Anika, who assisted as co-autocrat, worked hard on the teardown, and who is now doing the laundry from the event.

Gate:

  • Elena (who would have guessed) but once again she bailed me out and then spent hours cleaning the kitchen.

Kitchen:

  • Shareef - head cook
  • Mikhail - head server
  • Alex - butler

and some of the many who washed, cooked, served, toiled so others could enjoy:

  • Bernadette and Mikhail who helped with set up, tear down, and worked the feast as servers.
  • Sunjan and Duckie who looked after the bar,
  • Collegium Leonum (the Baronial Banquet house band :-)

For those I missed, I apoligise and will catch up with you later, but who would have guessed that after 17 hours of hard work it is still impossible to sleep.

Oh yes, and the amazing food, can I say enough about the cook and the food. That rice pudding was incredible.

For me, the evening was indeed magic. Thank you everyone.

John Macandrew, OP

ps. lost and found report pending.

Katherine Moore (used to be Kate de Passi) and I in our fortuitously-matching Flemish Girl outfits got to serve Head Table. The highlights of the food for me were the spinach and lentils, dolmades, squab curry over couscous, and the gold-flecked shortbread cookies. And Oh! the rice pudding sprinkled with pomegranate seeds! There were spontaneous outbreaks of eastern dance and a lovely short-enough-for-dessert court.

Sir Yusuf, Sir Griffin, and... and... (AGH! Brain seizure!) another person who I should know immediately, were recognized as new members of the Order of the Lion's Claw.

(Lady Anika Styfe)....

The decorations were absolutely amazing. Little scenes had been set up around the hall -- a pavilion with furniture in one corner, a desert scene on another wall. One wall covered completely with a faux brick wall. And three long saris hung from the ceiling down the length of the hall made the whole site feel very intimate. The candle chandelier flickered most attractively. Even the alcohol bar was encased in exotic silks.

Thanks should also go to my First Apprentice Qacha Suren - who is ALWAYS our third Bar Babe.

More Thanks for Sir Geoffry de Rennes, who came home to a frantic message on his answering asking for an emergency replacement for Sunjan - so he came straight out and I was free to go home............... I had the flu, and needed to be in bed.........ask Ducky what I did to the car as I pulled away from a little parking meter and tried to merge with traffic.

What I actually merged with was a telephone pole half a car length in front of me (sigh....).

Duckie would really like to thank the people who set up and decorated the pop-up Bar. The rope lights and the multitude of candles was fantastic! Too bad I didn't get to stay at the event :-(

Thanks to everybody who made a small hall look so big and well-decorated. The parking was cosy, but free at the parking meters after 6 PM. Watch out for the rogue telephone poles......

Stunt Typist for the Bartender
