The An Tir Kingdom Bardic Championship historically was generally held on the fourth weekend of September. Since XLIV/2010, it has been held in conjunction with the Kingdom Arts and Sciences Championship, and is held on the first weekend of March. Entrants competing for Kingdom Bardic Champion must prepare three historical pieces with full documentation to present before panels of judges.

Additionally, others may enter their items as single pieces, in order to display their skills, get a taste of the process, and receive feedback on how they are progressing.

As this event involves the selection of a Royal Champion, despite sometimes being relatively small in size, it is a Kingdom level event.

Since XLIV / 2010, the event has been combined with the An Tir Kingdom A&S Championship, which is an event similar in design, but specifically for non-performing arts and research.
