Hallveig Sigrúnardóttir joined the SCA in 1996 in the Shire of Hartwood and played widely throughout Insula Magna. She took an extended break from the SCA due to mundane life circumstances and returned to active membership in 2017. Her home branch is now Seagirt.

Previously known as Hallveig Eyverska and Muriel qui porte les chaperones.

She is in fealty to Viscountess Nadezhda Toranova as an Laurel Apprentice, and under the mentorship of Dame Morgaine Essex, who advises on matters of service within the SCA. She manages a small informal household for the purposes of welcoming newcomers and feeding the masses called Hallveig’s House, with two now-emancipated fosters Signora Aspacia Bevilacqua, and Natalia of Seagirt.

Research Interests and Ongoing A&S Projects

14th Century Lady’s Outfit
2023
Inspired by styles of the 14th century and adapting from Recreating History’s plus size patterns and The Medieval Tailor’s Assistant by Sarah Thursfield, I am putting together a weekend kit including a linen shift, linen kirtle, wool kirtle, linen sleeveless surcotte, wool hood, and accessories.

Venetian Style Waistcoat
2023
Inspired by extant waistcoats preserved in a variety of museums, I have started counting stitches, charting colour-work patterns, and practising techniques with swatches.

Hallveig’s House: Seagirt Street Eats
2020
Inspired by Daniel Serra and Hanna Tunberg’s An Early Meal and my abundant garden, as well as my Danish Immigrant Experience project, Hallveig’s house has started catering select events. Using ingredients that would have been familiar to Hallveig in Denmark, as well as what was available in Western Europe at the time, and focussing on period cooking methods, I have developed and presented recipes to tempt a modern Seagirtian palate.

Danish Immigrant Experience Persona Development
2020
For the past few years, I have been considering what daily life in Dublin would be like for a Danish immigrant. I am filtering this through my own experience as a third-generation farming immigrant to the West Coast of Canada. I am curious about the kinds of adaptations Hallveig would have to make as she settled: type of home, farming conditions and crops, methods of cooking, available household goods & tools, clothing choices, weaving, and personal relationships.

Viking Era Fashion
2018
Inspired by a variety of books, blogs, documentaries and grave finds, I have outfitted myself with a full kit and helped others with single items. Much of my style is conjecture, and includes alterations to suit my body, movement, and work within the SCA.

  • Rectangular construction garments, including short and long tunics, jackets, apron style dresses with straps, Skjoldeham Hood, trousers, sewn stockings, and four-panel hats.
  • Tablet woven belts, garters, and trim
  • Loom woven lengths of fabric including leg wraps, blankets, flat aprons, and shawls.

Tudor Knits
2017
Inspired by extant Tudor Flat Caps in the Victoria & Albert Museum, I am exploring the geometry and shaping process in creating similar styles.

  • 2023 a burgundy self-lined worsted weight wool cap, knit without pattern or counting, gifted to HE Leticia Talbott.
  • 2021 a blue-grey split brim 2-ply sock weight cap, gifted to Seamus MacDonald of Skye.
  • 2021 two doll-sized caps exploring split-brim and partial brim construction, presented and won Seagirt A&S Champion at Winternight.
  • 2019 a black single brim flat cap from hand-spun single-ply sock/lace weight alpaca, gifted to HL Isabel de la Roche
  • 2018 a blue single brim flat cap from 2-ply sock weight English yarn with red silk ribbons, presented and won “Best Accessory” at February Tir Righ Investiture. This hat was presented as Largesse to the Barony of Seagirt.
  • 2017 I counted stitches, and used a mathematical algorithm to understand how extant caps may have been constructed, including gauge, yarn types and stitch types, and developed a trial pattern.
