Domhnall Wardrope was born in the year of 1293 in Kintyre, he served as a Gallowglass in the army of Angus Og MacDonald, a supporter of the Bruces. In 1308, at the age of 17, he saw his first battle as a harnessbarrer to a Gallowglass in the campaign to bring Argyll under the control of King Robert I. In the year 1314 he was once again in the service of the King at the battle of Bannockburn. He fought in the king's battalion as a Gallowglass to stop the English invasion of Scotland by Edward II. After a decisive win for King Robert I, the Gallowglass returned with their leader Angus Og MacDonald Lord of the Isles. In 1315 they were called upon once again to serve the King in Ireland to set Edward the Bruce as Ard Ri of Ireland where they met up with Domhnall O'Neil who helped them take Ulster from the Anglo-Irish lords who were opposed to the change in leadership. In 1318, after the death and defeat of Edward the Bruce and Alexander MacDonald, Son Of Angus Og MacDonald, Domhnall O'Neill, King of Tyrone, offered to take some of the men returning to Scotland in to his service after seeing how fierce they fought, and Domhnall Wardrope was one of the men who stayed in service of the Great O'Neill.
