History

Bledyn Drwg was born in 1563, the second son of merchants, near the city of Caerdydd. His family practiced Catholicism in the home, but otherwise adjusted to the religious climate so as to avoid persecution. The timid but congenial Bledyn began life in his brothers shadow, attending to chores and learning the basics of the family business until a wealthy merchant came to their shoppe who, being pleased with the sincere hospitality shown to him, took favor upon Bledyn and his family. He offered to take Bledyn on as his apprentice and train him in the art of commerce. Having no heir, he opened the possibility that he would pass his business to Bledyn when he retires.

When Bledyn arrived at his new master's estate, he was given a modest room and was fitted for a doublet and breeches. He was expected to wake at the toll of the morning as given by the church tower outside Caerdydd, clean himself, and be available should the merchant require him.

The merchant wanted Bledyn to be capable of conducting fair trade both on his behalf and for himself. He also wanted him to have an appreciation for the arts. As such, Bledyn was placed under the tutelage of apprentices of the finest scholars with whom the merchant was aquatinted, teaching him math, reading, and writing. When time allowed as they traveled together, the merchant would complement their tutelage himself with the finer points of commerce and exposing Bledyn to performance arts.

Bledyn frequently accompanied his master both at home and in travel across Wales and England, as well as to France, Spain, and Scotland. He not only learned from his master, but attended to his needs and often assisted in business transactions. As a result, Bledyn added French, Celtic, and a smattering of Norse to his knowledge of English and Welsh. His master also ensured that he was provided with clothing that, while modest, would have professional appearance that invited favor and respect with clientele.

The annual Gwyl yr Offrymau (Festival of Offerings), an event built around celebrating harvest, community, and giving, allowed Bledyn an opportunity to return home so he could reunite with his family and for them to catch up.
