Athol Brose is an alcoholic drink that has been the traditional prize for the Barony of Adiantum’s Norse Stickball contest at Egil’s Tourney. The recipe was originally published in the second issue of the Elf Hill Times (July 1977), which was the Barony’s Arts & Sciences journal. Here is the recipe.

4 cups oats 1 gallon water 1 pound honey 1 quart whipping cream 1 fifth Scotch whiskey

Soak the oats overnight in water. Strain out the oats and save the liquid oat-water. Warm some of it and stir in honey to dissolve. Recombine with the rest of the oat-water. Add cream and then Scotch to the oat-water and honey. You can chill and serve, but it will taste raw. It will mellow over several days in the refrigerator and tastes much better than when freshly mixed, so for best taste, refrigerate for at least 2 days before serving.

Athol Brose lite – use half and half instead of heavy cream.

You can put the soaked oats into bread if you can’t bear to throw them out!
