Álvar Guerrero
New to the SCA, Álvar Guerrero, mundanely known as Tony Hernandez officially joined along with his wife Liadan the Sincere and 10 month old daughter Arya several hours after his first fighters practice within the College of Lyonsmarche on January 17th, 2010.
Persona
I am a Spanish Conquistador during the last half of the 16th century. I became a follower of Antonio de Espejo on his expedition into New Mexico and Arizona during 1582-1583. Born in Córdoba, Spain on April 29th, 1550, I grew up among the poor nobility and the merchant classes of the city. Not finding opportunity at home and wishing to escape the troubles brewing in Spain I sought adventure across the ocean, in newly discovered lands. Seeing the New World as an opportunity to make a name for myself, I purchased passage by selling off my share of the property given to me after the death of my father and never looked back.
I arrived in Santa Barbara, Chihuahua in early April which was fortunate for me, as the return of the Chamuscado-Rodriguez expedition, arrived in the same month. It was while hearing the stories of their exploits that I met Antonio de Espejo and joined his cause to ascertaining the fate of two priests who had remained behind within the Pueblos when Chamuscado led his soldiers back to Mexico. With several horses, purchased with the last of my funds, we set out on November 10th, 1582. Our leader, Antonio de Espejo oversaw a group of fourteen soldiers, the wife and three children of one of the soldiers, a priest, about 30 Indian servants and assistants, and 115 horses.
Our venture took us too many Pueblos, tracing ground tread by many Spanish boots over the last several decades. I believe that this was the cause of our small venture going mostly unmolested throughout heavily armed groups of native folks. We often resupplied among the pueblos, asking for news of the two priests, always getting the same answer, “over that way, they have them, etc”. It wasn’t long before we found out that the two priests had been killed.
At this point, Father Beltran and several others considered the venture at a completion, but Espejo had other ideas, wishing to push on further and visit more Pueblos and search of potential mines. I was for further exploration, as a successful/profitable venture was paramount to my immediate concerns. A great rift split the group, with those supporting our elected Captain, and those following the dictates of Father Beltran. It wasn’t long until the issue was forced and we allowed Father Beltran and the others to depart for Santa Barbara. Unencumbered by them, we continued on. The rest is a tale of disappointment and one bloody action. We would return to Santa Barbara on September 10, 1583.
I find myself now a swordsman with little to show of my ventures in the New World. My mind weighs heavily on the country I had left behind, the brutal realities of life on the edge of the good graces of God, and a drive to find purpose in this world. I still walk with head held high, hand on sword, every ready for opportunity or a quick coin to be made.
Tracking my own mundane heritage to Spain has had a great influence on my choice.
