Help:How to move a page

On occasion you might make a mistake of some kind with a page. Perhaps it's a spelling mistake in the title, or your name changed, or you made it in the wrong space — many people make their first persona page on their talk page rather than the main wiki space. Whatever the reason, what you probably want to do is MOVE the page.

Typically, if possible, it's better to move a page rather than to just create a new one an delete the old one. Why is this? Several reasons:

  • Moving a page allows you to save the contents without having to copy/paste or re-type.
  • Moving has an option to create a redirect (say, for a common misspelling, or your old name, or the like).
  • Most importantly, moving keeps the page's edit history and talk page along with it.

The Move command is under More.

Moving (renaming) a page means changing it's name, and possibly moving it to a new space.

This is done by using the Move tab at the top, under More. The tab is not visible if you are not logged in.

Selecting the name, and entering a reason for the move.

Then enter the new name (if any) and/or select the drop down to pick the space to move the page into. The most common scenario is moving a page from the User space to the Main space. You can check or uncheck options to leave a redirect (see below) for the old name, and if you would like to watch the page.

Note you can also enter in a reason you are moving the page, which can be very helpful when folks review the change logs.

Once you are satisfied, click on Move page.

Redirects are used to forward users from one page name to another. They can be useful if a particular article is referred to by multiple names, or has alternative punctuation, capitalization or spellings. A common use is to redirect folks from your User page to your Persona page in the Main space. For more information, see Media Wiki's Help:Redirects

Note: There are some scenarios where two pages exist with similar names, and you may not be able to move a page easily in these cases, as a page exists with the name (or in the space) you want to move to. In those cases, you will have to either select one that is the primary page, or combine the content into the page you want to keep. Then, replace the other page with a redirect to the desired page.
