July 11, 1302... After years of protest and unrest, the people of Flanders rose up in rebellion against their corrupt and illegitimate rulers, the French. The grossly overconfident French attempted to crush the “low-born” militia. The result was a rout of the French nobles, who suffered heavy losses at the hands of the determined Flemish. The battle, called “Guldensporenslag” (The Battle of the Golden Spurs) was a famous early example of an all-infantry army, comprised mostly of common folk, overcoming a well-trained and well-equipped army of professional soldiers that depended on the shock attacks of heavy cavalry.
