The Arts & Sciences room will feature several ongoing activities:

Costume Contest The traditional Daffodil costume contest is a judged effort by artisans of various levels.

Daffodil in any Medium This traditional contest must feature entries including a Daffodil or some rendition of it in theartwork. These pieces will be on display and judged in absentia. Entries must be dropped off inthe A&S room by 12:00 noon.

Spring Needlework Contest Spring is the season of renewal and growth and every civilization on earth celebrated this time of the year. It is colourful and fresh and holds many possibilities for creativity. This needlwork contest is a celebration of the theme of Spring from whatever culture or time period you are interested in. The rules are quite simple:

  • The piece of work must represent and depict the theme of Spring. This is a broad definition, that allows the participant plenty of creative leeway. The internet and the library have plenty of information on what Spring means to different cultures and societies.
  • This piece must be done in a period form of needleart. For example, cross stitch, embroidery, beadwork, hardanger, blackwork, applique etc.

The contest will be judged at the Daffodil tourney on April 3, 2004. The following months should provide enough time for participants to complete their piece. There will be beginning level, advanced level and children under the age of 12 level. The level is determined by how many times you have previously done the form ofneedlework. If you have only just learned it, and you may be an accomplished needleartist, you will still be considered a beginner for that piece. There are no limits for how many pieces you enter (for you workaholics). Please be sure to write whether or not you are a beginner on the written part of your work.

On the day of judging, please submit the following:

  • The finished piece of work.
  • A short, written paragraph explaining how and why your piece represents the theme of Spring. I am looking for how well you know your theme and why you used the colours and patterns or pictures you used. No other documentation is required. There will be no opportunity to verbally explain this. This MUST be done or your piece will not be judged.
