PERSONA DEVELOPMENT Born in Iceland in 1019, I left in 1035 to seek adventure, riches, and fame. My journey began with me becoming a mercenary in Norway. The name I was given at birth, Magni, is spoken only by my closest friends, mostly buried by time, a nod to a life I no longer live openly. It was a strong name, taken from myth, tied to the son of Thor, and a quiet declaration of my family's loyalty to the old gods.

But as the world changed, so did the names that opened doors. When I landed in Norway, I took the name Magnus, a name gaining favor thanks to the young King Magnus the Good, who was just eleven at the time. Some say he was named for Charlemagne, or 'Carolus Magnus' in Latin, a sign of the Christian age rising across the North. For me, Magnus become my shield. Respectable, strong and safe in places where the old ways drew suspicion or worse.

I still follow the old gods. Odin, Thor, Freyja, they have not left me, though I sometimes hide that truth behind the mask my new name provides. The world I walk in has little patience for open devotion to the old gods.

My travels took me across Norway and Sweden, then into the lands of the Rus, through Kiev, and finally to the Byzantine Empire. There, I fought alongside Harald Hardrada near the end of his time with the Varangian Guard, from 1040 to 1042. I returned with him to Norway and stood among his company as he claimed the throne in 1046.

I was there at Stamford Bridge in 1066, when Harald Hardrada fell. Whether I died beside him, or walked away into legend, depends on who you ask, and how much mead you pour.
