However, years ago [when I asked] a very wise Knight and Master why it was important for me to wear the various award medalions and regalia, [answered] thusly: "It is important because it lets the Populace know that your deeds are valued and to be emulated".

To put it more simply, our Peers should be the people we want to be like when we grow up. :-) And I can honestly say that most all of those Peers I have personally met have had at least some traits I would like to emulate, some more than others. There are a couple that I can most honestly say are my roll models, those whom I use as a touchstone for my own behavior. There aren't any situations in the SCA, and damn few outside, that haven't been helped by my thinking, "What would Amanda do?", for instance.

You know, that's one of things I'm giving a lot of thought during my current Vigil---I don't know if I can live up to being a roll model. It's a pretty big responsibility and fairly humbling. But, with a lot of help, I'm going to do my best.
