(Written July 2006)

Our first Clinton? That was 2 Clintons ago, and it was our very first SCA event. WHAT A GAS! And what an introduction to the SCA, Go big or go home I say. I remember the wars and thinking to myself "What materials do I have at home to make armor and how soon can I finish it?" , I remember the incredible garb people wore , especially the corsets (grin) and thinking "I wonder how fast I can get the wife into one of those?". All in all the experience was one I'll never forget. I wish we had joined sooner by about 10 years, but after experiencing that Clinton War we've been in dedicated pursuit of the dream ever since.

(A "keeper" posting from the North Road, July 2006.)

My first Clinton was 2004. It was a hot summer, but not nearly as hot and dusty as I thought it would be. Instead, I found a green valley with lush vegetation and a running creek!

My background is that I have been in the SCA since AS 23, but never made it to Clinton due to various factors. So though I was a Clinton virgin, I certainly knew all about it, so I set out to experience it all!

When you get to Clinton, you must...

Go to the old Castle site: I took Willow's "children's tour of Clinton". I got to see the spring, the bakehouse, various other locations, and we hiked up to the old castle site, where I learned that Clinton is nestled between a volcanic mountain and a granite mountain, and at my feet I found two rocks side by side to prove it!

Work at the bakehouse: I weaseled my way into a Bakehouse Ithra and developed a good eye for watching the goods in the fire and keeping them from burning! Not to mention the wonderful people I met working there!

Take part in Ithra: what a lot of great options there are! The biggest challenge is to get to everything!

Have a bath in the bathhouse: what absolute luxury that was! I had just come from a Guide camp where we certainly didn't have those modern conveniences!

Hike the ridge and look down at the camp: Elaine Greybeard and I took the high road and enjoyed our world spread out beneath us!

See the Children's Play: absolutely a delight - I'm a theatre rat and can appreciate the joy those kids had at performing, and could feel the joy the parents and crowd assembled had. But watch out - scary dragon!

Drink in the Tavern: Well, this didn't need to be a tradition for me to enjoy it, but it was good to be able to say I was there!

Watch the stars from the top of the castle: a motley crew of non-romantic middle agers, we invaded the smoochers to enjoy our own view of the stars and laugh into the darkness.

Have a smoke at midnight on the smoking bridge: hey, I haven't smoked in years, but it seemed part of the Clinton experience. The highlight of that cigarette was the kind gentle who gave it to me. When he learned that it was my first Clinton, he very solicitously started to instruct me on all the great things the SCA has to offer, and how much I would love it if I got involved!

Watch the sun come up from the castle: mists were still rising when I climbed up to the top level of the castle, and a lone flautist was going through his repetoire below me in one of the wall lookouts. The song as I reached the top: "Brave and Bonnie Host"

Watch the Baroness's Walk: love to see those fighters coming out of the bushes! Hee!

Attend a work meeting, work the gate, waterbear, pick burrs: you meet so many more people when you contribute!

Remember those who built the dream that is Clinton: Mistress Elaine showed me the corner where Master Robin and Baron Gerhard used to fire arrows into the oncoming foe. Too many memories in that castle now, and I'm not the experienced Clinton goer that you all are.

I may never get back to Clinton, but I treasure the experience of attending it. Thank you to all who make it magic year after year.
