Memoriam for Guillermo de Sierra Patace
from To Lucasta, Going Beyond the Seas
by Richard Loveless, 1648
Though seas and land betwixt us both,
Our faith and troth,
Like separated souls,
All time and space controls:
Above the highest sphere we meet
Unseen, unknown, and greet as angels greet.
So then we do anticipate
Our after-fate,
And are alive i'th' skies,
If thus our lips and eyes
Can speak like spirits unconfined
In Heaven, their earthy bodies left behind.
Halloween 1998 will always stand out in my memory, for that was the day I heard that this great Cavalier and truly genteel man had passed from this existence. His last act had been one of service, as he pulled his car to the side of the highway, feeling an attack coming on. Guillermo had struggled with his health for some time, but never gave any outward sign of the discomfort he was often feeling.
I met him at several Kingdom events, where he was known for his faultless courtesy and grace of person, unlikely figure though he cut. His outward appearance belied his great inner beauty, and I am glad I got the chance to know the real man. He was my favourite hugger, and an accomplished flirt, the SCA providing him with an outlet for his inner Cyrano. He regularly gave small gifts of flowers, and Godiva chocolates, bound with roses. Red roses always make me think of Guillermo.
A true romantic, it was an honour to have known this generous soul in life, and I wish his spirit peace and joy on its journey.
Fare thee well, my Cavalier.
