Help:Section Headings
You may have seen pages that are broken up into sections (and possibly sub-sections), and/or have a Table of Contents. These can indeed by helpful for longer pages.
They can help organize and break up a page into more digestible chunks. Each section has it's own edit button, so it makes it more manageable to edit just a particular section of your page. The Table of Contents (ToC) can help anyone viewing the page to quickly find information of interest.
