The First Tourney

The first tournament held in the lands of the Pacific Northwest that became An Tir occurred in Olympia, WA on 20 June 1970, hosted by the Baronies of Madrone and Three Mountains.

The Page for April 1970 announced: “Sunday, May 3rd, at the holding of Clyde Schumann [father of Raymond the Mild], 12 noon 'till exhaustion... Fighting with diverse weapons, Maypole dancing, etc., etc. Although some meager efforts will be made to provide refreshments, everyone is requested to bring his own lunch/supper/suckling pig/fattened calf/what have you...

DIRECTIONS: Coming from Seattle, take the St. Martin's College Exit, turn right on Martin Wy. right again on Sleater Kinney, and right again on Johnson Pt. Rd. The Tourney grounds are at the only house on the right between Swane & Bickle Rds. From Portland, take the Sleater Kinney Rd. Exit, turn left on Sleater Kinney, crossing Martin Way. For further information, call Raymond the Mild.”

Apparently the event was postponed and enlarged, being rescheduled for June 20th and both baronies, Madrone and Three Mountsins, became co-hosts.

The June The Page reported:

“THE BARONIES OF MADRONE & THE THREE MOUNTAINS - lst Baronial Tournaments -- a combined event to be held at the holding of Clyde Schumann. Coming from Seattle, take the St. Martin's College Exit, turn R. on Martin Wy, R. again on Sleater Kinney Rd., and R. again on Johnson Pt. Rd. The Tourney is at the only house on the R. between Swane & Bickle Rds. From Portland, take the Sleater Kinney Rd. Exit, turn L. on Sleater Kinney, crossing Martin Way. For information, contact Raymond the Mild, or Lady Lynn [from Portland].
