Sumi-e is the Japanese style of Ink Wash Painting dating back to the 7th century. Sumi-e paintings have a few commonalities to make the painting come alive: such as Notan (the various tones of gray), simplicity of subject, and variations in wet/dry brush strokes. Unpainted areas support the viewer in moving around the painting. All of these factors and more are important for the sumi-e artist to capture the essence or personality of the subject.
