First Principality Event in Lionsgate

Illustrated commentary on inclusion of Lionsgate and Adiantum expanding central An Tir from the previous Three Mountains to Madrone corridor. ‘’The Crier’’, December 1976,.

“One of the things we did while we were on the throne, and which was surprisingly controversial, was to decree that the next Coronet and Coronation would take place outside of the Seattle – Portland corridor. (There was actually a proposal to hold all Principality events at Millersylvania State Park – a rather miserable location as I recall – because it is half way between the two cities.) The next Coronet was this one, the first Principality event in Lionsgate, with the following Twelfth Night Coronation scheduled for Adiantum.” - Theodulf of Borogrove, who was Prince of An Tir during this event.

Event Announcement

CORONET TOURNEY FOR AN TIR, OCTOBER 2-3, 1976, LIONS GATE.
On October 2-3 AS XI, Gerek the Far-Seeing, Duncan Bog-cameron, and Bombor of Bombardia will autocrat the Coronet Tourney for An Tir in Warner Loat Park, Burnaby, British Columbia.

Set-up will commence at 8:00 am Saturday, and departure should be underway by about 4:00 pm Sunday.

SCHEDULE OF EVENTS: Saturday October 2: Opening court and Grand March, 11:00 am, followed by qualifying, challenges, lists, and final court. After Final Court there will be reveling, dancing, storytelling, and singing. This is, incidentally, an overnight event.

on Sunday October 3 there will be challenges, melees, twilsey-wopping, archery, fencing, and Closing Court. Various contests, games, and other activities will be interspersed throughout both days. (see below).

FACILITIES AVAILABLE: Fire-pits, camping, running water, washrooms, a not-too-distant shopping center. BRING: Your own food and drink (picnic-style will prevail), sleeping bags, tents, etc. Some accommodation may be arranged for those who prefer not to camp out, but do not show up unannounced ‘’sans’’ sleeping bag and expect any luck.

Also, those who have not reached the legal age of majority in either their place of residence or in British Columbia (18 or 21 in the US depending on interpretation) must bring a signed N.S.C.A. waiver (that's Northern Society for Creative Anachronism) to participate in fighting, twilsey-wopping, etc. Waivers may be obtained from the officers of Lions Gate or the autocrats (see below).

CONTESTS: Gurning (face pulling); cooking--a fruit dish; insulting--in period terms, in language fit for a Lady, directed at the person of your choice (there will be a five-minute time limit); nine-men morris; hand kissing (sponsored by Mistress Anne of Caerdydd, who will then be Princess of An Tir). There will also be assorted games, a quest, and dancing.

Lions Gate Coronet Addendum:
ALTERNATE SITE IN CASE OF INCLEMENT WEATHER: In case (perish forbid!) AnTir weather does its worst, and the heavens do indeed open upon the multitudes, the foresighted folk of Lions Gate have provided an alternate site, at the Student Union Building of the University of British Columbia in Vancouver. In case of doubt as to where to go, i.e. whether the downpour is sufficient to force a change of site, call (601) 526-1314--the home of Gerek the Far-Seeing. No archery will take place if perforce the alternate site is used. In any event, THE QUEST HAS BEEN CANCELLED.¹

Event Chronicle

AURORA CORONET TOURNEY, LIONS GATE, 0ст. 2-3

In an attempt to surpass Adiantum in every way, Lions Gate arranged for their own drowning at Warner (F)loat Park. When we arrived, rain was pouring down gullies and shoes, dripping off of tent roofs and down the backs of necks, and puddling in low spots and under tents. Those of Madrone were heard to mention their surprise at seeing ‘’that’’ much rain come down all at once. While ladies huddled under canopies and children shivered, several doughty warriors went forth to twilsey-wop, complete with a new Lions Gate invention, twilsey-helms complete with foam rubber cockade atop. The competitors in the lists soontook the field and a great mudding began.

Viscount Sir Edward Zifran gained the Coronet of An Tir again, and strangely enough, the sun quickly broke through the cloud layer. To which this chronicler hath no comment; she only repeateth here a faint cry carried to her on the wind, that seemed to whisper-- "Great Leaping Loats! Edward again?"

Afterwards, many gathered (tightly but cosily) at the house of Domic the Sober and his gracious parents. A final court was held, at which Theodulf of Borogrove was knighted, and many overdue scrolls were awarded. At the conclusion all waxed again exceeding merry, participating in hand-kissing and insult contests. One insult, directed towards a certain Baron in the Southlands, and delivered in an enthusiastic tirade by another Baron of a more northern reach, went unrecorded by this chronicler, but perhaps it is best left to word of mouth. (Never meddle in the affairs of Barons, for they are subtle, and quick to anger.) This hard-fought contest was eventually won by Viscount Sir Elrond. After many earnest entreaties for contestants to enter, the hand-kissing was a tie; Baron Gerhard Kendal won a ring for best lead-up, and Viscount Sir Steingrim won a garter for best follow-through.

All went to their well-deserved rest. (In sleeping-bags and beds, we hope.)²

At the next Coronet Tourney on 12 March 1977, “Bolverk of Momchilovich gave Nhille von Haukenkrantz a ring, symbol of the Order of the Silver Rose, for having placed second in the last Coronet lists.”³

Coronation

For the first time published, after their victory but before their coronation the heirs were given the title “Prince/Princess Apparent.” This use was only rarely used afterwards.
