Muirghein of Bristol lives in the kingdom of Mercia on the southwest coast of England around 800-820 C.E. She was born to a merchant sailor and ship master who owned his own fleet of trade ships. On one of his voyages, while trading in Ireland, her father brought her mother back with him to Bristol. Muirghein was taught how to sail, and the trade routes around the Irish Sea from her father. She was also encouraged by her father's need to have his only living child have the education required to assist in running his trade business. Muirghein was sent to the Abby in Bath so she could be taught reading, writing and arithmetic, by the brothers of St Peter. She has been allowed to remain unmarried as she owns lands with and through her father, and is an educated business woman in her community.
