I attended my first event in 1995 and fell instantly in love. Over the years I have gone through a lot of changes and growth as a person as well as in my persona.

Persona History

Lissette De La Rose is an early 16th century Woman born in Navarre who is the youngest daughter of a Textile Merchant and a french noblewoman of a minor house. Her mother died in childbirth and Lissette was raised by a series of governesses and household staff members while her father traveled. She learned the basic appropriate to any young lady of her time but she was wild and often ducked her responsibilities to ride in the woods or tend to her roses. She spent some time in the court of Marguerite de Navarre and was heavily influenced by her teachings on charity .Pierre Brantôme said of Marguerite: "She was a great princess. But in addition to all that, she was very kind, gentle, gracious, charitable, a great dispenser of alms and friendly to all." and Lissette strives to reach these same virtues.

Current Classes available for teaching :

The Many Flavors of Salt – Come join Dame Lissette in a discussion on the factors that impact the flavor of this ancient mineral as we taste a variety of examples. It is strongly recommended that you bring some water or other palate cleanser as there is a wide collection of salts in her collection.

Nef Nerd Out – Inventories from the mid 13th -18th centuries in France Italy and Germany contain elaborate ship shaped containers used to hold salt, spices, and even tableware. Come learn more about this example of conspicuous consumption in the form of decorative tableware.

Le Pays de Grand Gabelles– An Overview of the French salt trade monopoly and tax code. Established in 1343 this code that was supposed to be fair for all ended up with a very unfair ending. Come learn how it led to smuggling, piracy, and eventually became a primary factor in the French Revolution.

Roman Briquetage Salt Manufacturing - Join Dame Lissette for an overview of her ongoing experiments in briquetage salt manufacturing. Learn how her salty journey started and where it is going with a slideshow of her experiments manufacturing salt using unglazed terra cotta pottery as was found at multiple sites in England and France

Zines: using a modern low tech method to share your research and ideas

Intro to scribal techniques - Diapering : Create depth and visual interest on your scrolls and charters using this historical painting technique. Course will cover recreating a pattern from the French Bible of Hainburg along with techniques to create your own patterns.
