My first SCA event was a Sealion War, in perhaps ’96, held in what would eventually become the Shire of Ravensley.  I had been e-mailing HL Meredith, who was Seneschal of Hartwood at the time, for some weeks, and had managed to patch together some almost acceptable newbie garb.  I wandered on to site, alone, eyes as big as saucers, looking for this person I’d never met. Fortunately, the first person I asked was (then) Baroness Amanda Kendal.  (There can not be a better person in the entire society to give a person their first impression of the SCA) As it happened she knew exactly where Meredith & Ulric’s encampment was set up and after welcoming me and asking a good many questions gave me good direction.  T’was simple to find and within a few moments I was introducing myself, not to Meredith, but to her lovely daughter Warwar.  She was expecting me, as her mother had passed off the duty of responding to my e-mails early on. The young lady kindly showed me about the site, introducing me to people and explaining what was going on. Having been brought up in the society,  I think she enjoyed my newcomers enthusiasm and excitement.

I sat at her feet during the heavy battles, and while she embroidered she explained who the fighters were and told me the basics of fighting and armour requirements. She also introduced me to some of the most awful puns that I’d ever heard.  So it was with laughter and good company that I found my way into the society.

Some years later, at a different Sealion war, I married her.
