Background Story

She was born at the beginning of the 16th century in a little "community" called Postel, in the Duchy of Brabant, (there are stories untold!) but the hardship involved with this new family left them to move in with extended family situated not too far from Antwerpen. Eventually her father was able to secure work in the city as well as living space for his growing family.

By the second half of the 16th century, Mergriet took up with a migratory worker, Wolfgang, whom she met at a kermess just outside of Antwerp in Hoboken. Presently, they both live upstairs at the Eik en Zwijn Eik en Zwijn website and have two children together.

SCA

I have played in the SCA for roughly 15 +/- years with the majority of my time split between playing in the Barony of Ruantallan and the Shire of Lyndhaven in the East Kingdom followed by a little over a year in Ealdormere and finally landing in the Shire of Bordergate in Avacal. Various activities over the years include (but are not limited to)

  • Illumination/some calligraphy some of my work
  • Cooking feasts, dayboards and pretty much anything I can do by way of food at events including research, experimentation and transcriptions food blog and "translations" Middle English recipes into Modern English
  • Several forms of Embroidery/Needlework
  • Costume as a larger part of persona building, clothing not only inspired from painting but tested and rebuilt as a form of working experiments.
  • Dabbled in various martial arts (SCA) such as Rapier, throwing weapons and archery. I have played a little with armoured combat but never authorized.
  • of course, various volunteer positions and jobs both short term and long term
