ScribeTober

ScribeTober is an annual, month-long scribal challenge founded by Nykera Drago D'Argento to encourage daily creative practice within the scribal arts.

Modeled loosely after other creative prompt challenges, ScribeTober provides themed prompts designed to be accessible to scribes of all experience levels. The project emphasizes consistency, exploration of historical techniques, and mutual encouragement rather than competition or output pressure. The prompts are provided at the begining of the month and each day the definition and an example for each word is given as well as historical information. Daily prompts are given for each of the following caregories: Scribal trading card, Calligraphy, Inspiration and Zentangle- providing a multitude of options and creating a "no pressure" approach to inspiring art.

Structure

Prompts are released at the beginning of the month. Each day includes a definition, example, and historical context related to the prompt theme. Daily prompts are offered across multiple categories, allowing participants to choose how they engage.

Prompt Categories

  • Scribal Trading Card — Prompts exploring themes, terminology, and concepts found within the scribal world, designed to educate while inspiring creative interpretation.
  • Calligraphy — Prompts focused on calligraphic hands, practice techniques, exercises, tools, and skill-building guidance.
  • Inspirational — Prompts encouraging rest, reflection, breathing, and creative renewal, as well as education on practices that support focus, relaxation, and artistic joy.
  • Zentangle — Prompts using structured pattern-based drawing as a method for overcoming creative blocks and engaging the creative process in a low-pressure format.

Community

The ScribeTober group remains active year-round, allowing participants to join, share work, and engage outside of the annual challenge period. Participation is open to all ages and experience levels; past participants have ranged from beginners to advanced scribes, with the youngest known participant being seven years old.

Hosted primarily through Facebook, the ScribeTober community has grown to include over 600 members worldwide and regularly attracts participants from multiple SCA kingdoms.
