Etymology

Karl inn irski is a name of 10th century Icelandic origin. 'Karl' means 'free man'. 'inn irski' means 'from Ireland' or 'Irish'. Both names are documented in the Landnámabók.

Persona Background

My heraldic device (shown on right) consists of a per saltire background of vert (green) and argent (silver or white). The green recalls the green of Ireland, the white recalls the snow of Nóregr. Similarly, a triskelion of spirals, for Ireland, and a raven, recalling the ravens of Odin.

SCA Interests and Activities

I became active in the SCA in January of AS LVIII (2024).

Music: I was searching for my first musical instrument to learn when another SCA member pointed out that the mountain dulcimer had a period ancestor, the scheitholt. I acquired one of each and started learning. As expected, I really enjoyed learning and playing music. I re-started a monthly Open Bardic Circle at our Baronial Socials and have added a Kantele (Finnish traditional instrument) and a Dejembe (West African goblet drum) to my collection and learning efforts. I have been playing the mountain dulcimer/scheitholt since January AS LVIII (2024), and the Kantele and Dejembe since November AS LIX (2024). I also acquired a 'travel' Guzheng (only 40" long rather than the full-size 63" long). I am taking lessons and thoroughly enjoying.

Inkle Weaving Acquired an Inkle Loom for Father's Day 2025. While not a primary focus, I'm intrigued with the idea of making my own instrument bands and tunic trim, so keeping projects going in the background.

Martial In July of 2025, I became interested in Thrown Weapons, and acquired a set to start practice. I also started the process to become a Junior Thrown Weapons Marshall.

POSITIONS

• Librarian of Dragon's Laire: I became the Librarian in March of AS LVIII (2024). I took cognizance of the library, moved the collection to modernized shelving and updated the spreadsheet for tracking. I have been working with the Baronial tech team to install and configure an online system for searching and checking out library assets.
• A&S Minister of Dragon's Laire: I became the A&S Minister in August of AS LIX (2024), when the previous Minister fell ill.
