Before I can tell you about myself I must give you some of my family history. At the battle of Caim Eirge in Eire in the year of our Lord 1241, my Grandfather Domnall Mac Lochlainn the King of Aileach and Lord of the Cinel Eoghainn, was killed. My Grandmother being with child was hidden away and survived the massacre. My father (Brian Mac Lochlainn) was born shortly afterwards and spent most of his life hiding in Scotland from the clans that killed off the family. He married a sweet lass from Scotland named Kenna nic Ruadhraidh. He eventually returned home to Derry in 1268.
I was born Loegaire mac Lochlainn in November of 1270 and was schooled at the Catholic Church in Derry. My first taste of education came from Germanus O Carolan who was the local bishop from long before my birth until 1279. After his death Florentius O Carolan became the Bishop in 1280. My own cousin Geoffrey Mac Lochlainn became the Bishop in 1297 and is still there to this day.
My father taught me to fight with sword, bow and spear and we hunted deer and boar many times together. He had been trained to fight by an Uncle and was taught to read and write Gaelic, Scottish and Latin. He died in 1291 of wounds from fighting in a small Clan war. My mother soon followed him from what I think was a broken heart, as they were truly one in heart.
In the winter of 1306-1307 I met Robert Bruce on Rathlin Island and joined with him to help free Scotland from the English. Having ties with Scotland on my mother’s side helped him to talk me into helping him.
Having returned to Ireland I now am a Master of the guard for the Red Earl (Richard de Burgo). It seems that my friendship with Robert Bruce helped me to get this position as his lady is the Earl’s daughter (Elizabeth de Burgo). My wife (Eiblin nic Domniall) and I live in Northburgh castle (Greencastle) in the south west tower with the other house hold members. Being a good Catholic I try to make many of the Mass’s that are held daily. Pope Clement V has just passed away on the 20th of April, 1314. My daily routine is comprised of training and drilling the guard and maintaining the security of the Castle. I must see to the battlements and the storage of weapons, armor and the general training of the castles forces. The Earl and I often go for rides in the outlying areas of the estate so the guards also must know how to ride. It is always fun to watch the newer guards learning how to ride. I also teach them how to sword fight while riding on a horse. My wages are 33 Pounds a year (The equivalent of $15,000 US at current levels) from this I must purchase our clothing, my armor and weapons. Our daily sustenance is provided by the household and consists of various porridges, smoked meats, eggs, dairy and grains.
