This award is given for service to the Barony of Adiantum, it is the first service award a person would receive.

The award was first issued on October 22, 1977 (AS XII), Adiantum Harvest Revel, Founding Baron Michael of Dragonswood and Founding Baroness Alyanora of Vinca.

The award text from the third issue of The Elf Hill Times.

I, Ian Jameson, write the following: Some background is needed to truly appreciate the humor. At that time the University of Oregon Bookstore would allow groups to set up outside their entry on tables the bookstore would provide, for all sorts of reasons; they had standards, but you didn't have to be associated with the UO. The Barony of Adiantum had the practice of reserving these tables during New Student Week, and having a bake sale to attract attention and distribute information concerning the local SCA. A fundraiser, and hey, maybe we'd get new blood?

This time... everyone brought brownies. Everyone. Baron Michael was amused, and decided it was worthy of comment. So at Adiantum's next event, Harvest Revel, he bestowed upon everyone who had helped at that bake sale a nifty new award. The Order of the Baronial Brownie.

It was intended as a joke, and not to be taken seriously. Um. "Joke" and "not to be taken seriously" are not always things that stay that way. After a bit, it came to pass that those not involved at that bake sale came to covet this honor...and it became an honor. So there was a second issue. For whatever reason, the second issue had the background of the badge be Or rather than argent. All successive text refers back to the first issue.

I must admit that receiving my OBB had more meaning to me than my AoA.
