"Wench at Heart"

music and lyrics by Armiger Amnara of The Bards of KeyPoynt.

My hands are as pale as rose petals
My face is as fair as they come
My gowns are hand-stitched out of the finest cloth
But once court is over and done
I set my hair free from its intricate braids
And grab an ale, my thirst to quench
I strip myself down to a simpler gown
All corseted up like a wench

I may dress up like a lady
And I may play the part
It's all pretend, 'cause in the end
I'm still a wench at heart

Oh, I've learning in things like embroidery
But I'd rather be wrestling with them
I do as I'm told and act oh, so demure
Until I'm alone and then
I throw down my stitching and run out to play
And join the folk out on the bench
I'll tell a crude joke to all peasant-folk
And laugh it up just like a wench

I may dress up like a lady
And I may play the part
It's all pretend, 'cause in the end
I'm still a wench at heart

Oh, the wench's life is what I crave
No more of these tedious chores
Give me tangled up hair and a skirt cut to there
And I'll be someone's wench, maybe yours!

Every day I behave like a good little girl
And dress up like a porcelain doll
I've had it up to here with being insincere
I'm good and I'm done with it all
So I'll dress how I choose and behave how I please
And please whom I wish to as well
I'm a woman in charge, and so, by and large
Some would call me the wench from hell

No more dressing like a lady
No more playing at the part
No more pretend, 'cause in the end
I'm still a wench at heart

No honor to defend
Having fun in the end
And I'm still just a wench at heart
