'''William Hawkes'''

William Hawkes is a 16th Century Elizabethan mariner who currently resides in the Barony of Wealdesmere, in the Kingdom of An Tir.  He holds an Award of Arms from the Crown of Caid.  He is the captain of the ''Katherine Rose''.

Captain Hawkes is one half partner of a small but profitable trading company, Randall & Randall Limited, owned by John Randall, Esquire.  Mr. Randall's untimely demise (he fell overboard from the deck of the ''John's Folly'', a sloop owned by the company, during a storm) forced his wife, Winnifred, to assume his role in operating the company (Mr. Randall was a poor card player, and had amassed a great deal of debt; Mrs. Randall proved to be a capable businesswoman and soon her late husband's debts were paid, and the company was turning a respectable profit.)

Unfortunately, the success of Randall & Randall Limited attracted enemies, and through the efforts of a consortium of unscrupulous creditors, Mrs. Randall was forced to flee her estate and, in a midnight dash to the sea, she and her family were bundled aboard the ''John's Folly'' (captained by Captain Hawkes), to make their escape through a hail of cannon fire from two pirate vessels hired to sink the ''John's Folly'' and send any damning evidence to the bottom of the sea.  A terrible storm forced the ''John's Folly'' aground, and she was dashed to pieces on the rocky shore of An Tir.  Through the heroic efforts of Hawkes' loyal crew, Mrs. Randall and her family were conveyed to shore, with a few valuables and their lives.  Regrettably, most of the crew perished, and Captain Hawkes was found, battered, unconscious, but alive, clinging to a broken spar awash on the beach a few leagues away.  He was nursed to health personally by Mrs. Randall, and restored to good health.

The valuables salvaged provided enough to commission the construction of the ''Katherine Rose'', a 37 gun razed-built galleon of some 300 tons, built by Master Shipwright Matthew Baker, for which Captain Hawkes is currently recruiting hands to crew.  It is rumored that he will soon be requesting a letter of Marque from the Crown of An Tir.
