Event Highlights

Coronet Tournament was won by Ulf and Caoimhinn (pron. KEE-vah) over Kerrigan and Isabella Lucrezia Veneziano Martini.

(A Keeper Posting from the Steps, posted 16 Apr 2007)

The final three were Viscount Sir Ieuan Gower for his lady Viscountess Gwyneth Gower,
Viscount Ulf for his lady Caoimhinn
and Lord Kerrigan, squire to His Grace Darius, fighting for Baroness Isabella Lucrezia.

It was Kerrigan and Ulf in a best three out of five match, with Ulf taking the day. Congratulations to them both!

Exemplary courtesy and chivalry on the field that day!!

Please indulge us as we boast of great pride for our man Kerrigan of the Darian Household, with his best showing so far in a Coronet tourney, also receiving the Chivalry prize with many words of praise from Sir Owain of Ramsgaard.

Cometessa Nyfain of Brigantia ( the countess formerly Known as Morgaine)

To follow up on Cometessa Nyfain's mention of the Chivalry prize: Their Highnesses have decided to award a recognition of exemplary Chivalry in the Coronet lists -- similar to the highest award available in the Squire's Tournament. The recognition for this Tournament went to Kerrigan and Sir Owain stepped forward to quite eloquently emphasize that Kerrigan was not being recognized because he was one of the finalists, but because he had displayed a very high level of Chivalry during the tournament.

Bardic Championship was won by the brand-new Laurel, Master Stephen of Hunmanby (the second time he has held this honour).

Schedule and contest details

Tir Righ Bardic Championship

Declaration of intention is due ASAP. Everyone must apply via email to the current Bardic Champion and not in person. You are not signed up until you hear conformation of participation via email from the current champion. Format and Expectations:The competitors must perform three pieces (pieces may be vocal, instrumental, or verbal) in front of a panel of judges during the day on Saturday. One of the pieces must be heavily documented and will be assessed. The other two pieces are required to have at least minimal documentation. The other two pieces can be in 'sca style' but 'sca style' is not modern music, and filks are discouraged. Performers must be prepared to perform in front of a large audience as part of the competition; this is to prepare for being the coveted Tir Righ Bardic Champion. The competitors are encouraged to use at least two contrasting pieces to show their range of performance ability (warning: You will be asked what contrast you are using!). Performers are encouraged to watch the entire competition to learn and get a feel for the other talents in the principality. The winner will be announced at court the following day. A note to the populace: Bardic is a spectator sport and on-lookers are welcome!

Other Tournaments

Tournament of Inspiration -Saturday This tournament is common in the West, the land of our early origins, and serves as a way for both the inspirations and fighters to continue their journey after being eliminated from the Coronet Tournament.

After 4th round the Eric’s will be divided and fighters, along with inspirations, who have been eliminated from the first tourney will move, if they so wish, to the Tournament of Inspiration. Each fighter will challenge another to 3 fights. The winner of the bout then names, and points out if possible, their inspiration to the other fighter. The losing fighter presents themselves to the Princess, tells of the bout, names the opponent and inspiration and receives a flower to give to the winners inspiration. Inspirations are encouraged to remain close to the Eric in order to further inspire and receive flowers. Fighters who didn’t enter the Coronet Tournament may also participate in the Inspiration Tournament, please have an inspiration to receive flowers

"This Order Meeting Now" Banners

Somewhere near where the orders are meeting, but in plain sight of as much of the rest of camp as possible, there will be a banner pole that will fly Peerage banners *during* the meetings.

Chivalry – black, with white belt Laurel – green Pelican - red

The Peers-in-Waiting(-For-Their-Meeting-To-Start) will no longer have to hover around the edge of the Eric, trying to figure out which Order is currently meeting by who's sitting in the circle.

EBraking-2007-04-17.jpg

We arrived at the site to discover that the landowner had thoughtfully mowed the field the day before. The cut grass tracked everywhere and made our hems wet, so we raked it all off the lists field and the walkways. Baron Devin took this picture.

First appearance of the Peerage Meeting banners.
Chivalry - black with a white belt
Pelican - red
Laurel - green
Only the Chivalry banner is completed. But I'm pleased -- two people mentioned that they used the banners to locate the meetings. And some kind soul thought to take down the Chivalry banner when the Chivalry meeting concluded Saturday evening (I was off-site at dinner). Look for the Laurel banner to be completed in time for May Crown.

Some concerns were raised about the timing of the Pelican and Laurel meetings. They were rescheduled for Saturday morning 10-11 and 11-12 respectively.

I picked up my absolutely charming and delightful "E.B. the Flemish Mouse" made by Caitrina inghean Anndriasa. Look for a picture on my website shortly. (Flemish Girls... er, Mice Rock)

--Elizabeth Braidwood 22:34, 15 Apr 2007 (EDT)

(Keeper Posting from North Road, 16 Apr 2007)

I arrived late and left early (children had no patience for the beauty of the moment, the site, or the significance of the event), but I saw a lot of friendly faces in the chilly, breezy event. A few off the top of my head--in no particular order or rank--Baron Harold Devin, Baroness Aurora (and Daphne), Viscountess Amanda, Viscountess Bernadette, Viscount Sir Oak, Mistress Yolande, Kenneth & Vivien, Ros d'Armand (swordguy), Countess Melissa, Genevieve Barbota, Isobel fitz Gilbert (Ithra Junkie), Master Stephen of Hunmanby, Hrothgar & Asa, Viscountess Kesenia (sorry if I misspelled that), Miles fitz Hubert, Baron William of the Battered Helm, Mistress Megan Althea, Mistress Meresigha, Mistress Elizabeth Braidewood (Flemish chicks rock!!), and many more. Not too many, however--it was a small event. (Does anyone know the official gate count?) [Added to event overview at top of this page. --E.B.]

The event was held at a public park with horse trails around it, and more than a few mundanes stopped on the trail to watch us...but from a safe distance.

There were a small handful of merchants around the eric, including a potter, a clothing merchant, Amanda's pewter jewelry, Ros (with the swords, of course), and Meresigha's barter box (where my eldest daughter--age 9--got a great deal on a pewter dangley, a magical ring, and two lovely beads in exchange for a tunic that I made that morning for the 5 year old who refused to wear it).

The middle daughter (age 5) got a great deal on an East Indian dress with lots of sparkley stuff and embroidery on it, and she happily wiggled and danced for anyone who asked.

Two-year old Ben got a shield to go with his helm and breastplate. We left the plastic sword at home, so he carried his sister's princess lunch box instead.

Don't ask me about the fighting. I don't know one fighter from the next, for the most part. All I know is that the final three was Ieuan Gower, Ulf, and the Guy in Red With Plaid Pants (Darius' squire). Final two was Ulf and the Guy in Red With Plaid Pants. Ulf Princessmaker (as I was assured is his new name) won best three of four fights, earning the lady Ciomhann (KEE-vah) the title of ban-tanist. (HUZZAH!)

A young Oak-ling was doing a Monty Python impression and found some "lovely filth" and was covered up to her elbows in it, not to mention her shoes, legs, and dress. She ran, delightedly, up to her daddy, stretching her little arms up to show him the muddy mess. He merely gazed down at her for a long minute, amusedly silent, then sent her away to clean up.

Viscountess Bernadette was running a contest to make words in the theme of "bardic" out of the beads that were given to each person at gate as their site token. Adults were given small colored cubes, of which mine didn't add up to much. I got a Q and an E. Yeah, good luck. Gudridir got a Z and Y. If we were playing Scrabble, we would have lost for sure! My children on the other hand, were H, U, M. Sounds bardic-ish! I presented it to the Viscountess and she was delighted to have at least one entry. My dear friend, Gudridir, used my E along with an acquisition from Vivien, who was kind enough to give letters to my middle child (who was wailing and crying at the moment), she was able to form the word "KEG"...not directly bardic related, but musicians through history have been paid in beer, so it sort of worked. I don't know the results of that contest or if there were other entries.

After the fighting ceased, and the tanist and ban-tanist presented with their circlets, I played a chase game with my middle child on the eric. It was a giggley fun time! But by then it was after 5 pm and my kidlings were hungry, so we left to find food.

The border line ups in both directions were short and easy (even as we cross into the US at 6 pm and had to wait a few extra minutes at shift change), and the guards were very kind.
