Event information

Attendance: 1400 Weather: Sunny in the mid 80s with exactly one 30 second spot of rain all weekend. Layout: Circular Roman Roads with some barbarian attacks pushing the roads around. Number of tournaments: 16 Number of meetings: 28

September Crown was held in the same field and approximately same layout as Warren War the previous weekend. Allowing people to leave their encampments on site during the interveneing week was a huge success and significantly added to the enjoyment of both events.

September Crown is coming!

In four short days the great Shire of Shittimwoode, the oldest and most bunnyful shire in the whole Kingdom of An Tir, will be hosting September Crown on behalf of King Amalric and Queen Caia!

The schedule is ready! The site rules are in place! The tension is palpable! Who will be the next Heirs of An Tir? This Saturday, we will finally find out!

Quick September Crown FAQ:

What reservations do I need?

None! The only reservations that we took for September Crown were for eric reservations, which closed on August 22nd, and merchant reservations. Neither RVs nor camp sites are reserved by the autocrat team for anyone save Royal encampments.

Will the ground be level for the Crown Tournament?

Yes! We found out at Warren War that the grounds are not up to Crown Tournament standards. Accordingly, we are fixing this problem to insure the health, safety, and enjoyment of September Crown.

Will there be site tokens?

Absolutely! We have made over 1500 round wooden site tokens that commemorate King Amalric and Queen Caia's Crown Tournament in true Shittimwoode style!

Scribal Activities

Greetings Scribes (and those yet to be scribes;-},

Crown is fast approaching and we have lined up several activities for you.

On Saturday there are going to be Ithra classes, an Artisan's Gallery (either for scribes and illuminators in the College of Scribes day shade or for other arts in the A&S Pavilion right next door) during Crown Tourney, a Scribe's Vice party/social gathering at 7 pm (bring your scroll/charter portfolios and one of your favorite snacking-while-scribing treats along with tales of scribal mishaps to regale us by;-).

On Sunday there is a 10 am All Scribes meeting hosted by the Kingdom Scribe HL Tuirrean dal gCais (come see what the College is up to:-} and continued Charter Painting on the Eric. Someone has mentioned that there are oak trees which produce galls on site and we might go on walk-about for those early that morning. Dame Tamlyn will also be teaching (not for Ithra credit) the Charter painting (11:30 am) and Quill cutting (after the Laurels meeting gets out or 3:30 - whichever is later) classes in the Dew Drop Inn.

If you are even remotely interested in the Scribal Arts please drop by any of the Scribal Activities on the Eric (you'll recognize us by the Checky Or and argent, a triskelion of arms proper, garbed sable, each hand grasping a quill pen gules banner) or in the Dew Drop Inn (Ithra classes you need to sign up for) at posted times.

Blue Dragon Inn Stage

Greetings, I am Blue of Clan Dreaming sky, purveyor of the Blue Dragon Inn. My lord, who is incredibly accommodating to my artistic obsessions has built a small wooden stage, suitable for up to three players at a time. (okay five if they are drummers.)

Yeah!

So I am making an open call, here on the steps and also at my Inn at Crown itself, for musicians who would like to perform. Time slots are from 10 a.m. to 2 a.m. daily. They will be ½ hour each. Of course if you’re jamming and no one is scheduled around your time, you could have longer.


This is going to be such an awesome crown and we are so excited about all the amazing and fun things we have planned at the Blue Dragon Inn. If you have questions or would like to reserve a time slot please contact me off list.

Schedule Corrections

Just checked the most current Crown Schedule and already have some corrections..:-o

The College of Scribes meeting is at 1pm on Sunday at the Scribes' Pavilion. The Charter Painting class in the Dew Drop Inn will be 10 am on Sunday.

And on the A&S portion of Crown Schedule,

Artisans' Gallery is in the A&S Pavilion on the eric (not in the Cloisters) and is a place for people to bring their projects and work on them in the company of others while watching Crown Tourney.

Dame Tamlyn is not in charge of the 2 pm A&S meeting Saturday in the Cloisters nor the guild displays (yaay:-} Master Rauthulfr <Cacao-Laurel AT comcast DOT net> probably is and may be able to answer any other questions you have concerning A&S activities.

HL Godith <ladygenevra@yahoo.com> has been reserving space and organizing the layout within the A&S area - if you have not contacted her about your Guilds' or other A&S activities' pavilions please do so as soon as possible (not sure when she will be on site for the "duration").

Ithra Classes

Greetings, Ithra enthusiasts!

I am proud to offer Ithra classes at the upcoming September Crown, just days away!

General Information: The University of Ithra provides a place for those interested in Medieval Arts & Sciences to explore and further their learning. Although SCA membership is not necessary to participate, participants at Ithra must make some attempt at pre-17th century costume. Students must agree to obey all rules and regulations as set forth by the Regents and enforced by the Provost, faculty and staff. All grades are pass/fail, decided by the instructor. Non-attendance is a “No Show”, no credit is given, and all class fees are forfeited, although handouts may be mailed on request. Any appeal to a grade must be made to the Board of Proctors. Notification will be given only to those who attend but fail a class. No classes may be audited; this is a long-standing policy of Ithra. Class limits are chosen by the instructor; though the size of a class may be expanded in case of need, this is not a routine or acceptable practice. Overfilling a class will only result in less effective teaching and learning. Class fees are set by the instructor based on estimates for handouts and materials and may include travel costs for the instructor based on actual costs, not mileage. All fees must be paid in advance before class sessions begin. The Matriculation fee, which covers the cost of the Compendium and maintaining the records of classes the student attains, is $2.00 and is only paid the first time the student registers at an Ithra session. Additional Compendiums are $1 each. The Registration fee, which covers operating costs, is variable from session to session depending on the various costs. For this session, the fee is $2.00 This fee is in addition to the Matriculation Fee. If fees do not accompany the registration form, you will not be registered. If you register late and the classes are filled, you will receive a refund. Supplies are handled by the instructors. This Ithra is going to be held on the September Crown site--sleeping accommodation in private residences will not be provided. Ithra classes that are held at an event, such as this one, are not pre-registered. Online registration will not be available--the information is for viewing only and for making plans when you arrive on site. Payment in US or CDN cash or U.S. check or money order made out to "SCA Inc. University of Ithra Borderlands." (Sorry, no CDN cheques.) The site has no indoor facilities, so classes will be held in day shades or in the great outdoors. Come prepared with hats & sunscreen. If you would prefer a comfortable seat, you may want to bring a camp chair to sit in. Registration begins at 8:30 a.m. Saturday at the Chancellor's desk. Classes are filled on a first-come & paid basis. Thank you!

Children's classes are available!! We ask that children be at least 7 years old to attend.

Class descriptions:�ART OF THROWN WEAPONS 2 hours Arion the Wanderer Learn the few simple rules that make the difference between sticking your live steel throwing weapon in the target and bouncing it off. This class demystifies how to assess and correct a non-sticking throw. By the end of this class, the successful student will be able to watch someone throw a live steel weapon, figure out why it didn't stick, and instruct the thrower on how to correct their throw so the weapon sticks in the target. Instructor will provide handouts and live steel demonstration weapons. Students should wear comfortable garb. Min 5; Max 10 Cost $1.00

BEGINNING NÅLBINDING 2 hours Jorunn Steinnabrjotr Nålbinding has been done since the Bronze Age all over the world. It is the predecessor to knitting and crocheting, and is done with a single needle. The technique creates an interlocked looping of yarn that won't unravel. The class is a hands-on introduction, beginning with the Viking period Mammen Stitch. Students will receive a basic handout, appropriate needle, and small ball of yarn to practice. Complete instruction booklets will be available at Sparrowhawk Studios Merchant booth. Min 2; Max 6 Cost $10.00

CELTIC KNOTWORK 2 hours Aaron the Sinister Learn how to create simple Celtic knot panels for varied uses. Instructor will provide work sheet with bibliography, graph paper, and reference books to look at. Students should bring pencils, eraser, and ruler. Min 1; Max 8 Cost $1.00

CHARTER PAINTING TECHNIQUES 3 hours Tamlyn of Wyntersea This is a hands-on introduction to painting kingdom charters using Gouache. We will discuss the techniques, styles and tools needed for painting and will do a practice sheet before working on actual kingdom charters. This is also a good starting point for those who want to paint scrolls but aren't sure where to begin. Please bring a pencil. Students are asked to bring any gouache paints, watercolor type paint brushes or paint palettes they may already have, but this is not required. Instructor will provide handout, charters, practice pieces, paints, brushes, and water containers. Useful Info: This is a hands-on class using paint; please wear appropriate clothing. No droopy sleeves. No food or beverages. Min 1; Max 8 Cost $1.00

CHILDREN’S HERALDRY: CREATE YOUR OWN ARMS Francesca Tiepolo 1 hour Specifically for the younger crowd, a coloring booklet with simplified information regarding heraldic shapes, colors, and critters commonly used to create a heraldic device of their own. They will then transfer the design to their prepared shield shapes using paint, felt pens, and stencils. Please note: The shields are meant for decoration or light play only. They are definitely not marshal approved! Min 2; Max 10 Cost $1.50

CHILDREN’S NEEDLEPOINT 1 hour Aelana Cordovera We will work a little sampler of Needlepoint to introduce the young a heart to this fascinating needlework technique. Students may take materials to continue to work on their project at home. Instructor will provide handout, canvas, yarn and needles. Students should bring scissors and sewing kit if possible. Min 3; Max 8 Cost $3.00

COPTIC BOOKBINDING 2 hours Aelana Cordovera Coptic books have pages sewn to the wooden boards with a link or chain stitch. The boards may be left bare or covered later with leather. The books could be kept in a leather case and worn around the neck. We will make a model of a sewn boards book in the Coptic manner. Instructor will provide handout, paper, boards and all necessary bookbinding tools. Min 3; Max 8 Cost $10.00

DECORATED BOOK COVERS—LEATHER 2 hours Aelana Cordovera We will experiment with some early leather book cover decoration techniques, stamping, period tooling and application to wooden boards. If you have leather stamps, bone folders or other leather tools please bring them along, but don't buy anything until you have tried out what I have. Instructor will provide handout, leather, boards and all necessary tools. Min 3; Max 8 Cost $5.00

FIORE'S FLOWER OF BATTLES 4 Hours Mark der Gaukler Hands-on introduction to a school of Western martial arts and the philosophy behind it. Fiore's system is practical and brutal, and gives some surprising insights into both life and combat of his time. Dress appropriately. A few wasters (wooden swords) will be available for loan, but students are encouraged to provide their own. Min 3 Max 10 Cost $2.00

GOTHIC CALLIGRAPHY 4 hours Sister Guineth the White Learn the rich, visually dense style most characteristic of the high Middle Ages. Handout includes two similar variants and period capitals both penned and drawn to use with Gothic, and is embellished in period styles. Students should bring their chairs or stools and their favorite calligraphy pen and ink, and a drawing board or clipboard, if desired. Instructor will provide handout and practice paper. If needed, beginners' calligraphy pens will be available from the instructor at cost ($3-$4). Min 3; Max 10 Cost: $2.00

GOTHIC HAND SEWING 2 hours Aelana Cordovera We will examine documented early clothing sewing techniques. A sampler of stitches will be made and handout of sources and other stitches will be provided. This is a must-have course for authentic costuming. We will also explore ways to give a hand sewn look to machine made garments. Students should bring sewing kit with scissors if possible. Min 3; Max 8 Cost $ 3.00

HAND PUPPETS 2 Hours Francesca Tiepolo Basic fabric hand puppets for children up to age 8 – simple sewing (pre-punched holes in fabric, large blunt needles) of the body, adding hair, costuming and facial features. The children will learn manipulation of the puppet and have the opportunity to perform a song, poem, joke or just converse with the audience from the puppet stage. All fun, no pressure. Min 2, Max 8 Cost $2.50

INTRODUCTION TO MAILLE 2 hours Lord George Bjornson Hands-on class in which you will learn how to make the rings used in making maille, and how to weave them together. I will teach the basic European 4 in 1 weave to novices or more advanced weaves to those who have some experience. The class will also touch on the history of maille. Instructor will provide tools and wire. Min 2; Max 10 Cost $3.00

INTRODUCTION TO SOAP MAKING 2 hours Alienor Sanz-Argent Make Soap!! Wear clothes you can get messy in. Instructor will provide materials, handouts, and safety equipment. Students should bring pen or pencil, extra rags and/or rubber gloves if they have them. Min 1; Max 8 Cost $2.00

INTRODUCTION TO VEILS 2 hours Aelana Cordovera Early period ladies usually covered their heads with a veil. We will explore some different styles of simple veils and how to wear them - Anglo Saxon, wimple and barbette, and early 14th century styles. Types of materials will be discussed, and students will leave with measurements or patterns for their desired veil styles. Instructor will provide handout, paper for patterns, and sample veils to try on. Students may bring their own attempts at veils to share and critique. Min 3; Max 8 Cost $1.00

MAKING A REED PEN 2 hours Mahee of Acre Students will walk away from class with some information about reed pens as made in the Middle East, and a pen they carved themselves. Students should bring an Exacto knife or some other super sharp slender blade. Min 1; Max 15 Cost $2.50

QUILL CUTTING 2 hours Tamlyn of Wyntersea Learn how to prepare and cut a quill to use for calligraphy or line work. This is a hands-on class; students will go away with a cut quill after having some experience using it. Students may bring a small sharp knife, (a pocket knife will do) if they have one. Min 1; Max 6 Cost $1.00

SHADOW PUPPETRY 2 hours Francesca Tiepolo A brief history of Shadow puppetry stories, music, staging and puppets, then the rest is hands-on. Each participant will choose a story, play or song and make the puppets to go with it. There will be an opportunity to learn how to manipulate the puppets on a shadow screen (stage) with modern lighting, due to safety issues. Min 2; Max 8 Cost $1.50

THEATRE WITHOUT REHEARSALS 2 hours Linnet Kestrel Discussion of how to put together and run a small acting troupe performing period material, based on instructor’s two years’ experience. The assumption is that you will never have enough actors, props, confidence or rehearsal time, and the discussion is on how to work around that. Students will also read and walk through some plays, to get an idea of the material available. Handout includes bibliography of period texts and sample plays. Min 3; Max (none) Cost $3.00

EQUESTRIAN MARSHALLING 2 hours Khaidu Naranaimorin This course will outline the steps to becoming an Equestrian Marshal and their duties and responsibilities. Examples of weapons and some equipment will be shown. Instructor will provide a copy of An Tir Book of Horse, various handouts, examples of weapons & equipment. Min 2, Max 10 Cost $2.00
