SCA History

Isabel shooting at Seagirt SST 2010/AS 45

Isabel joined the SCA in AS 43 during Seagirt's SYG trials. She has since become a fixture amongst many communities in the Barony since she regularly attends dance, archery and served as Arts and Science mistress for two years. She takes great joy in costuming for her and her friends and once participated in the Ravens War garb competition. In her words:

"I once competed in and won an on-site garb competition for Ravens War 2010 called Project Runaway Bride. We were in teams of 3 (2 workers, 1 model) and the premise was the workers were servants for a noble lady who had an arranged marriage, but wished to run away with the man she loved. Her father had stripped her of all but her chemise to stop her from leaving, so we were charged with making her a wedding gown to get married in. We had 5 hours to construct it by hand from scratch with scraps of fabric chosen from a pile provided to us. My team was at a disadvantage as Dmitri spent most of the day fighting in the war (though he did hand me scissors at one point) and Sofia was barred from helping as she was the model) Still I managed to prevail and most people actually thought what I can made was her normal garb! I have included a photo of Sara (Sofia) in the outfit. Everything but her chemise I made."

Isabel served as event steward for the very first time at Seagirt Yule 2010. A year later she mentored Lady Thorun for her first time as event steward at Yule 2011.

Her interest continue to expand as she has taken up the challenge to become a Scholar of Seagirt, entering her well-written scroll to Baron Eideard at Seagirt's Daffodil Tournamnet AS 46

Her closest friends in the SCA are Morgaine Essex, Janet Kempe, Emma Oaken, Amelia Huntsman, Inga Petsdottir, Dmitri Ivanovich, Alfgeir Gunnarsson, Rashid al-Qasim and Sofia de Lucca.

Persona History

Isabel was born in a small town just outside the capital city of the Kingdom of Valencia around 1487. The only daughter of a textile merchant and his wife, Velazquez and Catalina de la Vega, her family moved into the city to take advantage of the creation of the Silk Exchange, a trading emporium that acted as a hub for all of Europe. With access to trading silks, taffetas and other fabrics to places like England, France and Italy, Isabel's family prospered and allowed her father to afford to send her to be educated at the newly completed University of Valencia (or Estudies General as it was called at the time) in 1499. After the discovery of the Americas her father had looked forward to the boom in commerce that would be brought on by trade from the New World. Queen Isabel of Castille had declared however that only lands under her Crown of Castille would be allowed to do so, and as Valencia fell under the Crown of Aragon, her family was barred from New World trade. This actually led to an economic crisis in Valencia, and Isabel was forced to relocate with her family to Florence in 1504, avoiding the eventual revolt of the merchant class.

While in Florence Isabel met Raphael de Lucca, the son of one of her father's trading contacts who owned a high end clothing store in the city. After years of courtship, Isabel and Raphael were married in 1513 and she now lives at his family's estate.

Isabel and Sofia should never be mixed together with anything except water. The results can be both amusing and disastrous.
