Iron and Ink, hosted this year by the Shire of Dregate, is offered as a weekend RETREAT for Inlands Artisans. However, anyone and everyone who desires to join-in and take part are most welcome. A variety of hands-on classes will be offered throughout the weekend to learn new skills or expand on existing ones. Classes will also be available for young people. Instructors and students are encouraged to talk "off-hours" about their areas of interest. A display area will be available Saturday afternoon for those wishing to bring items. The shire will sponsor a Potluck Feast Saturday evening followed by an open Peerage meeting/social which all are invited to attend.
Camping is available on site.
Please send class requests to tamlyn@verizon.net one for each member you are signing up (we’ve lost some of the registrations that were doubled up before). Include your name, branch, contact information and a list in chronological order of the classes you would like to take. You may also include your second choices in case a particular class you want is full. I will be signing you into your first pick, if available and returning a confirmation of the classes you are signed up for. Money for classes should be given directly to the Instructors. Please remember that you are committing the Instructors to providing materials that they have to pay for so only sign into those classes you fully intend to attend.
It may be appropriate during the classes to wear modern clothes to avoid damage to or getting your garb messy, please dress as you feel best for your classes. During Saturday evening and the Potluck Feast we ask that you "dress up" for the occasion in garb

There has been a landslide of requests for the Archer's Arm guard and Archer's Demi-Gauntlet class projects so the Instructor has agreed to split them into two separate classes:
Evrard will be teaching Archer’s Demi-Gauntlets Saturday 9-1 pm
He will be teaching the Merry Rose Arm Guard Saturday 2:30-6:30 pm
Youth are permitted to take the class, but must be accompanied by an adult.
You may sign up for one of your choices and enter an option for the other if there is room (we’re trying to get people their first choice at least, but there are a lot of you:-).
Students, The instructor asks that if you have a pair of leather shears that you bring them and that if you are making a demi-gauntlet you contact him ahead of time with your size as he will be pre-cutting them.

CHASING

The art of line ornament on metal, used from B.C. through the end of The SCA period to decorate metal surfaces. Students will learn the theory behind a chasing tool and make at least one tool. Students will have the opportunity to practice the use of the tool on scrap metal.
If students have they have them should bring, small hammers chasing or ball peen, portable vise, files for steel, c-clamp. Room Requirements: Access to electrical outlet.
ADVANCED CARD WEAVING - Free form design on card woven bands. SAT 9-1 pm Instructor: Master Fiacha MacNeil of Glencar Cost - $4 Hours: 4 Students - limit 8 There are a number of techniques that allow the creation of free form designs on a cardwoven band. This class will discuss techniques known from extant period examples and also some plausibly period techniques. The class will also discuss pattern drafting and how to weave from a pattern. A loom with a piece in progress will be set up for several of the techniques. Students will be encouraged to try their hands on each of them.
Students should bring an alert mind and flexible fingers. Note taking materials may also be useful but the intent is encourage learning by doing. There will be a generous handout.
COMBAT ARCHERS DEMI-GAUNTLET SAT 9-1 pm Instructor: HL Evrard de Valogne Cost: $? Hours: 4 Students: 6 max Description: Create a demi-gauntlet suitable for use for use in combat archery. Out-of-class additional work required (gauntlet will need to be courelli-boulle hardened)
UNDERGLAZE PAINTING
SAT 9-11 am Instructor: Mistress Morgaina atte Wodelonde Cost - $6 Hours: 2 Students - limit 8 Students will be provided with bisqued bowls, which will be painted with under glaze using Medieval Middle Eastern styles. After the class I will take these bowls back to my kiln, coat them with a transparent glaze and fire in my kiln. Class Participants can pick up their bowls at Coronation. If participants would like to donate their work to the Palouse Potters Guild Empty Bowls Fundraiser I will donate the materials and firing and photograph the bowls for you. MEDIEVAL GLASS BEAD MAKING FOR THE MODERN AGE Instructor: HL Marianella da Ravenna Cost: $2.00 Hours: 2 Maximum: 8 students a session SAT 9-11 am SAT after dinner INTRODUCTORY class: This class will introduce students to the basics of glass bead making including safety around glass and flame, work area set up, introducing the glass to the flame, shaping a bead, adding color to a bead and what to do with it once it's formed. Students should go home with at least two beads of their own making.
SAT 11-1 pm SAT after dinner INTREMEDIATE class: Knowledge of the topics covered in the Introduction class is mandatory. In this class, students will learn how to make their own thin rods of one color of glass and multiple colors of glass (stringer, twisties and mosaic cane). A brief introduction of what to do with the materials just created will be demonstrated.
SUN 9-11 am SUN 11-1 pm ADVANCE class: Knowledge of the topics covered in the Introduction and Intermediate class is mandatory. It is also essential that students be comfortable with flamework. Taking this class should not be considered by those who have just taken the Introduction class. This class will cover application of stringer, twisties and mosaic cane and will include a demonstration on encasing.
WORK SHOP demonstrations: This class should be considered an open forum for points of interest to advanced students. It can include demonstrations of how to create hollow beads, vessels, pendants and buttons. Students will work on their own Mapp torches and have a chance to work on an oxy-propane system. This is a workshop style class where students will pursue their own interests with the aid of the instructor. This shop is only available upon advance request.
Students should bring: Clear safety glasses and clothing made of natural fibres. Long sleeves must be kept out of the way and long hair must be tied back. Students should bring a torch if they have one or if they wish to be instructed on its' use in particular. For those who simply want to try their hand at beadmaking torches will be available on a rotation basis. Torch: A basic plumbers torch and a can of MAPP gas. You will also need: A 4 inch diameter ring clamp to go around the can of Mapp, a 4 inch angle bracket, and a 3" C-clamp. Additional items to make the process easier are: Clear safety glasses, a metal cookie sheet with rim, an old stainless steel cooking knife, small needle-nosed pliers.
METAL STAMPING SAT 11-1 pm Instructor: Master Jorg Siggeirrsen Cost: $1 Hours: 2 Students: No limit The art of stamped ornament applied to metal surfaces, used from B.C. through the end of The SCA period to decorate metal surfaces. Students will learn the theory behind a stamping tool and make at least one tool. Heat treatment and annealing will also be covered. Students will have the opportunity to practice the use of the tool on scrap metal and how to develop patterns. If students have they have them could bring, small hammers chasing or ball peen, portable vise, files for steel, c-clamp. Room Requirements: Access to electrical outlet.
MERRY ROSE ARM GUARD
SAT 2:30-6:30 pm Instructor: HL Evrard de Valogne Cost: $? Hours: 4 Students: 6 max Description: Create either an archery arm guard based on the Merry Rose findings. Out-of-class additional work required (arm guard can be tooled with personal designs)
SILK DYEING SAT 2:30-6:30 pm Instructor: HL Saikhan Naranaimorin Cost: 3.00 Hours: 4 (with a drying time break in the middle) Students : Min. 3/Max 10 Learn how to trace patterns onto silk with gutta resist, and dye it in sections. Great for making beautiful fluttering silk banners. A fast and easy method to do heraldic patterns with. Students will receive a handout and the opportunity to make and take home a silk project. Instructor will provide some patterns, or you may bring your own (must be 11" x 11" or smaller) Not a documentable period process - Several examples of very early wax resist dying in handout. Instructor Supplied Materials: Silk, Dye, Brushes, cups, Embroidery hoops, gutta and bottles, handouts. Room Requirements: water access - work area that dye could possibly be spilled/dripped in. COOKING IN MEDIEVAL CLAY POTS SAT 2:30-5:30 pm Instructor: Mistress Morgaina atte Wodelonde, OL, OP Cost: $3.50 Hours: 3 Students: 8 (note: Please have your hair covered or tied back.) For this class participants will learn ways to use ceramics for period cooking over open fires. We will prepare several foods in Medieval style clay pots directly over coals. We will sample some of the foods we cook during the class; other fare prepared will be served at the evening’s potluck. Handout included.
PAINTED GAME BOARDS SAT 2:30-6:30 pm Instructor: Mistress Alicia le Wilfulle Cost: $10 Hours: 4 Students: 6 max Create a gameboard for a medieval game using modern materials and methods. Designs for a few different games will be available for you to choose from. Playing instructions will also be provided. Materials will be provided.
FLAT GILDING SAT 2:30-6:30 pm Instructor: Dame Tamlyn of Wyntersea Cost: $4 Hours: 4 Students will learn a method of medieval gold application used in manuscripts using gum ammoniac. Additional mediums will be used as time permits.
BASIC RECORDER PLAYING SAT 2:30-4:30 pm Instructor: Master Stephen of Hunmanby Cost:? Hours: 2 Students: Min 1/Max 6 This class will introduce you to the art of playing the recorder, including the basics of getting a nice sound, reading notes, and playing tunes. This class is suitable for alto or tenor recorders as will as soprano. A handout will be provided, including a fingering chart. Instructor Supplied Materials: Handout with fingering chart and music Ithra Supplied Materials: Student Supplied Materials: A recorder (soprano, alto, or tenor) Instructor does have some recorders, however if the student is really interested they should own their own. THE LUTE AND ITS MUSIC SAT 4:30-6:60 pm Instructor: Master Stephen of Hunmanby Cost:? Hours: 2 Students Min 1/Max 6 This lecture/demonstration class will look at the origins and development of the lute in Europe up to the end of the Renaissance; the development of playing techniques and styles; the different notations used for lute music; and an outline of the range of the lute repertoire. NARROW BAND WEAVING SUN 9-1 pm Instructor: Master Fiacha MacNeil of Glencar Cost - $0 Hours: 4 Students - limit 8 Students with looms and questions/problems should bring them. The session is open to inkle, card weaving, lap and table looms, i.e. any loom portable enough to bring to the session. The looms from the advanced card weaving class will also be available for use. The intent is to have a more or less informal gathering to share tips and techniques and to encourage improvements in the quality of the finished product. Some card weaving supplies will be available.
GOUACHE PAINTING TECHNIQUES SUN 9-1 pm Instructor: Dame Tamlyn of Wyntersea Cost: $2 Hours: 4 Students: 8 students Description: Students will learn through practicing basic gouache painting techniques for use on Scrolls and Charters and an advanced method “Washes” a medieval method of layering paint.
REPOUSSE SUN 9-11 am Instructor: Master Jorg Siggeirrsen Cost: $1 Hours: 2 Students: No limit The art of metal relief for 3D decoration on metal, used from B.C. through the end of the SCA period. Students will learn the theory behind a repousse tool and make at least one tool. Students will have the opportunity to practice the use of the tool on scrap metal. SEEKING INSPIRATION SUN 11-1 pm Instructor: Mistress Alicia le Wilfulle Cost: $5 Hours: 2 Students: no limit, other than how many handouts I have This class will discuss where to find ideas for charters (and scrolls) and how to get them onto paper, working from the point of view that you don't need to be an 'artist' to design charters, just be able to copy. Discussion will include pitfalls to avoid when designing charters. An extensive handout will be provided.

POUCH MAKING

Come and make a pouch for your trinkets! Learn one way that belt-pouches can be put together. We will have leather pieces already pre cut for you to lace together, and if you are interested, you may learn a bit about decorating your pouch with a stamp/carving tools.

Viking A – Frame Class

This class will teach the basic construction of a model sized Viking A-Frame and the historical finds from the Osberg site.

CHILDREN'S MONGOL HAT MAKING
10 am-12 noon
Come and make a hat for yourself. You will learn a basic running stitch as well as learn how to measure your head to get an accurate fit. Hand out to help you finish your hat if time allotted is not enough. (Please consider that the materials will not necessarily be of "period" authenticity. We use imitation furs and wool fabric instead of hand felted wool.)

Recommended for ages 1-5.
PARENTAL REMINDER: Sending your child to a class is an individual choice that needs to be tailored to each individual child. If you do not feel your child is emotionally ready to be separated from you to attend the whole class it is important that you choose to either attend the class with your child (no class fees are charged for parents attending classes with their child) or choose not to have your child enrolled in that class. There are play activities available during the course of the day that will engage and delight your child if they are emotionally ready for that with you there. That having been said, Pied Piper is NOT a baby-sitting service. We do not potty train, change diapers, make bottles, or otherwise baby-sit. We are here to teach and engage children in learning activities that are fun and interactive so that everyone may learn in a safe and creative manner.
